Bullet for .308

I think it's really hard to beat a 150gr Nosler partition in any hunting .308 Win for game, my second choice for jumping Whitetail would be the old Winchers 125gr SP and any of the 130gr bullets we have today, in fact, one of the most accurate bullets I ever used in a hunting rifle in .308 Win was the Speer 130gr HP Varmint, unfortunately it was a varmint bullet, never the less they are crazy accurate in all the .308 Win's I've owned over the years. Just my 0.2 Cheers

My friends and I have used one form of Barnes bullets for the past 25 years and we have taken a great number of game animals with them. Typically they provide complete pass thru and a 4-6" wound channel from start to finish. If the 130 gr TTSX shoots accurately in your .308 rifle, It should perform perfectly on deer sized game. I just took a Wyoming Mulie last week with a 127 gr Barnes long range 6.5 bullet at 325 yds. middle of the lungs shot and exit hole was the size of a golf ball. The 225 lb 4X3 took 5 steps and fell over. Accuracy from the Barnes lineup of bullets has been very favorable in all my rifles and calibers.

I have a 20" 308 with a 1-12 twist that I shoot here in California. With copper I always worry about keeping my velocity up so bullet performance doesn't suffer. I shoot the 150 power hammer over some Benchmark powder. It's exceptional! 3000 fps and .402" 5-shot groups at 100 yds. We took it out of state to hunt antelope and mule deer. The 168 eld-m worked like magic. Again, deadly accurate and the bullet functions perfect out of the slower 308 win. 2670 fps is all she does but we just dial and bang. All one shot kills out to 479 yds. Bang flops too, no running or anything. A 20 inch barreled 308 can be a very handy tool out to 500 yds. Really fun rifle to shoot!

I just acquired a custom built .308 with a Defiant action with a 20" 1:9 twist barrel. I know the common twist rate for a 308 is generally 1:10. I'm gonna use this gun for whitetail deer and hogs. I have a suppressor that I will run sometimes. What bullet recommendations do ya'll suggest? I have a few boxes of Remington 150 gr core-lokt tipped. I would also like to see how far I could stretch it out on some target shooting.
All rifles are not created equal. If you anticipate long shots then shoot at a big paper target at that range and assure yourself that the bullet remains stabilized. Not a .30cal but I have three .270win rifles, all three 1:10 twist. At 1000yds the SIG970 and the Remington700 shoot a perfectly round hole, well stabilized. The Savage110 starts to yaw at around 600yds, a keyhole, all with 150gr nosler bullets. Test it out and prove to yourself what really works for you.

I just finished building 2 different 308 rifles. One loves the Barnes 137grn TTSX running at 3125fps. great deer and hog round. The other is running Hammer Hunters 174grn at 2945fps. Dropped a bear last month without a problem. Funny I have built and worked with many different rounds and settled back to the 308. Have fun.
Are you getting this level of performance with a 308win? 174 gr at 2945 fps is blowing my mind in a 308win case.

I recommend the 152 grain Hammer hunter or any of the hamer bullets below 166 grain. Next would be 168 grain amaxs or 178 eldx or 168 hybrids or 185 classic hunters
They quit making the 152 HH I loved that bullet too. There's a 152 shock hammer and a 150 Power Hammer. The PH is supposed to be just like the 152 HH that was discontinued. A guy can also shoot the 151 Absolute. I agree the 168 Amax is awesome!

How fast is that 208 moving at 950?

My .308 with the 208's is going 2400 fps. During load development I got to 2520 but the 2400 load was one ragged hole, so I kept it. That is a 20" barrel.

Just for clarification, are you going to handload, or are you looking into factory-loaded ammunition?

It's very possible. I was pushing over 3200fps with a 20" 308 with 150 grain Hammers.

Here is the average on a ladder test. I never had high pressure signs.
