bullet expansion test results

Thanks!

I'm trying to get the pics rotated, I don't know what's going on with Photobucket tonight!

If you take the pics with your cell phone, try rotating them with the editing program that's built into your phone's OS, before you upload them to photobucket.

That's what has me stumped, they're oriented properly on my phone and on photobucket, they're just rotating when I post them. Stupid computers.......:D

Hey Yorke,

I don't remember if you got moisture into your test medium or not. We had full expansion with that same bullet at almost identical vel. We use water in our testing though.

Nice job again.

I keep the leather soaking in a tub of water in the back of my truck and just pull it out when I go shooting. I still have a few more 338 sledge hammers that I'll try to test around 1700 fps.

Since I have a bullet, ill show it too. This is the 200 eld-X recovered from under the skin on the off side of a 6 point bull elk slightly quartered away, at 610 yards, impact velocity approximately 2460 fps

Hmmm, might have to contact PB customer service. They messed my account up when they updated something last year, and my account was messed up for over a month. I wasn't able to upload any images to my account. They finally figured it out and got it fixed.

Their customer service can be slow, but they will get it figured out.

Do you use the PB app on your phone? If you use an iPhone you can download the app, and upload photos straight from your camera roll. And they will upload the direction they're oriented on your phone. It's a free app, and if you don't use it, it's worth a try to see if it corrects the problem.

I just looked at all the pictures again. It was about the 47th time I looked at them. Based on these tests, I believe there is a clear 1st place, 2nd place, and last place. I think there are a couple of bullets that could be debated for third place.

It all changes when you put them on game!!

I agree and disagree on that. I think in the case of some of the Bergers, on game performance may be slightly better than I'm seeing. It's also possible that it could be worse on game once you introduce hair and bone into the mix. There is the reality that I have as much fluid mixed into the target as I can while still being practical give the limited time I have to do the tests each week. I have an idea to retest some of the Berger Hybrids (since those are the bullets that seem to be doing the worst) using a slightly different method that's just going to take more time. Setting up a water jug for each round fired through this test would have required a lot of time and jugs when considering there's at least 2 shots fired with each bullet tested. I will say that so far the majority of the bullets I've tested have come out looking incredibly close to bullets which were recovered from game.

I'd be willing to bet that even most of the bullets which failed to expand would have kill a critter pretty well since most of those samples became unstable and tumbled, causing pretty significant damage in the process.

I love bullet testing, in the very least it helps you interpret what when on in an animal. It's pretty amazing when you think about how many milliseconds a bullet has to do its thing!! I built a repeating bullet trap out of a poly 55 gal drum, laying on the side the front has a window of self sealing material, the top is opened up and I can hang other media down into the bullet path. Let's me get repeatable rounds while kind of simulating and animal, works well but does not beat the data from cull hunting!!
