BS or not?

A little discussion I am having in FB  ...

This is no reflection on Feenix but a simple QUESTION of who really cares? Any one of us can go on any website with a forum and make the same or similar claim without backup or evidence. It's done here frequently.

This is a quote taken from an article about a world record target which has been certified for years. I think his statement is about as honest as we could ask for.

First off, let me preface this article by admitting I am not the "greatest" long-range benchrest shooter. There are numerous competitors that I shoot with on a regular basis whom I consider to be better shooters than myself. I was just fortunate to be in the right place when "preparation and opportunity" happened to meet! You need to have a good rifle and good reloads--plus a certain amount of ability and a whole lot of luck to set a record in any rifle discipline.

I am happy for the guy if he did it and especially if it is repeatable.

I have shot a few great groups and figured I got lucky and with a great rifle just had a good day. I competed for many years and shot many long range matches at 600 and 1000 yards and never saw a 1 inch group at 600 yards with all the master marksmen shooting.

That Is tough for the unlimited bench rest crowd. But never bet anyone that It can't be done.

BS is determined by several different methods.
If someone does something that others cant do, they may call it BS simply because they cant do it.

If someone is truthful and does something that Others say cant be done,it is not BS, it is ether skill or luck on his part.

If it is Physically impossible for anyone to do and some claims to have done it (Like having a 100 yard zero and making a 500 yard shot with no hold over) because the round has NO drop. Then the BS meter pegs out.

This is one of the places that I apply the old saying - Don't believe any thing you hear, and only half of what you see.

I would have to question it unless I could see it first hand. So is it BS or not. I don;t know.

Factory ammo has improved and become more consistent. But I would say either he got lucky on one group and now considers it the norm without repeating evidence OR (and I've seen people do this) he shot a 5 or 6 shot group then discounted the 1 or 2 fliers which pop up in factory ammo and called the ones that hit close together his group. Or he fired a 2 shot group the hit good and he stopped there.... I would bet one of these happened.

We knew from the start it was factory 140 eld match let's not act like we didn't know what cartridge it was.

I fish with a friend, his family Dad Mom and Brother are all in the IGFA book. His dad has held most of the white and blue marlin line class records. His Mom has the 4# white marlin record that will be tough to beat at 98#. His brother was the captain of the man that has the mass state blue marlin record and he is back running that boat. I've met a few of the men and women that by and large are always in the conversation for line class records. I've been fortunate in that respect. I've also shot along side some of the greats when I was young. Always an also ran back then but I was able to learn a thing or three from alot of those experiences. I hope that I can give back all of that and then some to both aspects of what has been my passions!
This friend this year in a 21' CC handed a whole fleet of boats some as large as 75' customs(12mill) their --- on bluefin this past season. One of the nicest persons I have ever had the pleasure to meet.
Well Cap there is a difference between "catchin" and simply having a rod in your hands with some 4# test line on it. And you know exactly what im talking about. Lots of things that just shouldnt pass the sniff test, because when it smells like it, it usually is. lol

I am not affirming nor denying what the guy shot nor states, but I am a little puzzled by the number of responses that imply a factory rifle with quality "match" ammo cannot produce good groups. Guys, this is not a new phenomenon. Being a long ago competitive shooter and shooting club VP, we would take heavy barreled Win 70's and Rem 700 308's and a case of Federal Match 168 Sierra's and found many would shoot 1/2 moa. That was in the 80's !

When we played with different factory loads, lapped locking lugs and/or bores, if needed, and maybe bedded the recoil lug, some of these club rifles were stellar performers. Nothing fancy nor overly expensive. One of my first Palma rifles was simply a Win 70 Varmint in .308, and shooting the issue Palma load, it performed admirably.

YMMV

Lol yes indeed. However shtuff happens. One of the things about shooting is the bs is only one target away as you know. The fishing stuff is getting harder and harder to prove as there are many less "sportsman" today. I have fished a few line class days to say the least. I'd rather use rope myself if I could. When the rules changed and you could use 30' leader and 10' doubles for light line records(below 30# class) many records fell like the 573# Blue marlin on 6# test. If a blue stays up I can get within that 40' to get the 400 or 250# leader(I can't recall it was either or) in hand then it's a true tug of war but doable for a record. Now it is 15' and a double to say it's much harder is proven out in the book. That blue record and a few tuna light line will be miraculous when they are eclipsed. More so on the tunas and swords as they don't jump/stay on top like a white, blue black or stripped marlin. Not to mention you can manipulate them into running to the surface to jump.
If your interested in chasing whites with line class gear. I can do that but it is only on glass flat days 5-10 days max a season and very short notice. It's fun because it's all sight fishing. Shoot me a pm Here is a sample fish is about 60#. We were in a shark tournament so we didn't have the right set up for this fishery

Agreed, but some are modest about it. Another guy posted this and boy they went to town on him ...
