Besides the 6.5 prc

Whe
we have a range where we can shoot 1000 - 1250 - 1500 - 1780- and 2100 A lady who shoots with us shoots a 6 creedmore and has no problems ringing steel at 1780 . I shoot a 6.5 x 284 and a 300 win mag and can hit at 2100 and 1780. The 6.5 is a lot more fun over the course of a day.Get a caliber that has good long range bullets , put a long barrel on it and a good ballistic calculator ,spend money on a good scope and go out and practice. It really is not that hard to shoot a mile and you don't need the latest greatest super mag to do it .
Where do you shoot?

My vote would be 6.5-284 or 6.5-300. If you want to get there with a bigger bullet 338LM or a 375 cheytac. You can hunt a lot with a 6.5 so you could do both with one gun

A fast twist 243 or 6.5 in any form will work if you're just looking to shoot targets. I wouldn't worry about the bigger guns until you're interested in actually hunting at extreme range.

I have 22" proof 6.5 PRC that is running 156's at 2900. I am running 135's at 3090.

I would be very interested in hearing the load you worked up to 2900 fps out of that 22 inch pipe. I'm not doubting you at all. I am actually interested LOL.

Have you noticed any sticking of the bolt at that velocity?

I would have thought that a 24 inch barrel or even better a 26 inch barrel would be the ticket.

55.5 rl26 adg brass 210m. Retumbo got me to 2880 but it was too dirty in the shorty. I've had no issue with extractor marks, primer flat, or sticky lift. I did feel bolt click at the top of th I lift at 56.

the 550 group is not great, had a wind shift, and didn't shoot well.

Do you think that you would get more juice out of a 24" or 26" barrel? The 22" pipe would be very handy for hunting purposes.

Yes but I run a suppressor so I wanted a short barrel and gave up some velocity. Right now I'm running 135a tips at 3090 and think they are going to be bad medicine for predators.

I have both a 6.5 X 284 and a 338 LM I don't really care to shoot the Lapua 100 times in one afternoon. The 6.5 X 284 with a 28" barrel and a break is actually pleasant to shoot..But Loud!

madarcher, by the way, I have several 6.5-284's and they really do well with a long barrel and slow powder. I run 147's at 3015 53 grains rl26 in a 28" and can go up over 3100. However, I prefer the light load accuracy. I have another 28.5" that runs 147's at 3025 with 56 grains retumbo. Both run 140's easily at 3100 and both are rifles I use for hunting. The 28" was my preferred go to hunting rifle for the past several years and shot several long range practical comps with it too. If you keep the shot strings mild you should see 1500-2000 rounds and if you take care of it, I bet you can see 2000-2500. I have 1000 on both with .002 or less throat erosion.

Thank you! I was wondering about throat erosion
