Berger .277 EOL Extreme Heavy Hybrid 170 Grain.

Mr. Beck,

I was looking at doing a build based on this bullet and want to do something like a 270 STW or a 270 RUM. It will be a fun little project, hopefully I can get some velocity behind those 170 grain fattys. I'll let you know how it goes but I'm excited about it. Will be a fun deer/elk set up for sure! Love your show by the way

Let us know how your project goes...

I hit an accuracy node @ 3225fps with the 170 Bergers, 3630fps with a Hornady 140 SST. Fouling load is a 150gr SST 3350fps.

270 Wby, Mausingfield action, 28" 1-9 Benchmark barrel (with barrel nut).

Lots of good info in Big Jake Duke's thread on the 270 heavies...http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f17/270-300-win-mag-now-feasible-155307/

270 win
Ruger No 1 action
30 1/2" Pac Nor barrel 1 in 8"
Leupold Vari X iii 6.5x20 with TS 29 reticle

Load:
170 gr Berger EOL
56 gr H4831
Velocity 2950fps avg

I am more than impressed with the new Berger 170 EOL. I did find more accuracy with more jump 27 thousands. Also the jump is adding a few fps and less chamber pressure. I believe I will not try to improve on the caliber beings I'm getting .5MOA groups and really super ballistics out of a 270 win case. The Berger gives the 270win a lot of ft lbs at longer ranges.

Although I almost built this rifle as a 270-300WM I'm more than satisfied with it. If there is another .277 build in the future I believe I would make it a 270 STW. Those ballistics would be down right scary.

Wow that's impressive. I'm in the process of building a .270 to shoot the 170 EOL myself. Just to tell everyone it just an ol 270 Winny lol. I was planning on going with a 28" tube on a Savage action. I wonder how much velocity will suffer?

Let us know when you get your build together...

It is still fracking cold outside, snow and mud to my shooting spot. I have a 270Win on a Howa action with a 28" Benchmark barrel, 1-9 twist. I just got my delivery of the 145gr ELD-X in...

So...I also have a bunch of 170 Bergers...

I am also interested how fast we can push the 170s/145s thru an old 270win...with a 28" barrel.

What brand, twist barrel are you getting?

We need to link this thread to Big Jake Duke...I also got an accuracy node with the 170s at .3 off the lands...

Will do.
Man come to Texas, it's been anywhere from the 40's to 60's lately.

Going with a 28" Pac-nor 1-8 because of altitude, a whooping 330 ft.

When are you getting your barrel and what is the profile?

Are you going to screw it on yourself?

I have to free up some funds before I can order it, hopefully soon though. It's goin to be a heavy Palma contour so .925 at the muzzle.

Yes I'm planning on putting it together myself.

Hey guys has anyone use the 170 in a steyr pro hunter they seem to have a 1:8.6 twist which would be perfect Thanks Shane

Hay bob this thread is old, but I have a remington700 270 with 1-10 twist. And just got some 170 eol and using RL26 56 grains pushing around 2800 fps with a .344 group, with a lethality out to 800 yards witch was surprising to me!

That's good to know. I'm pushing the 175 Matrix out of my .270 AI with 30" Lilja 3G 1:8" at 2993 FPS AVG (got to near 3100 FPS but ran into some pressure signs and group opened up) with 58 H4831SC. I plan on trying the 170 Bergers when I ran out of my 175 and 165 Matrix bullets. Thanks for sharing.

You can now order 165's from Matrix food for thought. I know the straight 270 and the magic pixie dust known as Rl26 pushes 140's to 3200ish @ 3.550coal in my 24"

So did you actually verify it to 800 yards or even shoot for groups past what ever distance you got the 0.344" group ?
I seen great groups with the 95gr vld in a 243win. 1 hole groups at 100yards but did not have the twist rate to stabilize it past that. 8-10" groups at 300 yards.
That's is why I'm asking if you have shot groups past your 100 or 200 shooting distance.
