Berger .277 EOL Extreme Heavy Hybrid 170 Grain.

If anyone is looking for 170's check bullets.com and Midway. I just picked up some from Bullets for a very reasonable price and free shipping . I'll be testing them in my Savage 110 270 wby 1:8 26". If I can find a good load I may use for my 2016 elk hunt. If anyone has some good loads to start with I'd be interested.

Thanks
Gene

Any idea what your max mag length is in your Savage? With my Mark V action I cannot even get close to the lands (at mag length) with the 170 Berger. I have the "standard" Weatherby freebore on my Benchmark barrel...

Have you shot any of the Matrix 165s from your Savage? So far H1000 is doing well for me, 7977 is showing promise...Retumbo sucked...

I got out again today and shot some 170's through my 270 Sherman and played with some RL 33. I got more velocity with less pressure than the RL 26 load I was using. I'll bet you guys with the weatherbys will really benefit with a healthy charge of RL 33. The 3 shots over my magnetospeed had an ES of 4 FPS!!! 3024, 3022, 3026 fps.

RL 33 is the next to try on my list...I posted my group above at over 3000fps in the Wby 270(H1000)...Heading towards a 3150+ accuracy node...I have more head room with the Berger 170 using H1000.

I do not think that I have ever had an ES of 4...nice

I really need to contact Elkaholic to ream my Howa/Benchmark 270 Win to a Sherman 270...

Pics of groups?

I'll get a picture uploaded in a bit. Funny story on the group... I was shooting at 155 yards (i know its random) and with the magnetospeed on it changes my POI alot. My target was 12x16" and the bullets were hitting on the flap that I taped up above the paper I had out so I didnt see the holes from my first two (solid shots) and gave up on the third and didnt use my rear bag... big mistake when I got up to the target and saw two holes touching and the third shot was 2"right and 3/4" low. I'm really kicking myself for not following through on the last shot. You can take what you want from my group but I'm extremely confident that if i had used my rear bag and actually aimed carefully the group would have been .2-.3 moa.

On another note... Longtooth you should get a hold of Rich and make yourself a 270 Sherman. He is great to work with and its a great cartridge!

Shot more of the 170s today...the sun was too low to get chorno info...

My baseline today...165gn Matrix pushed to 3166fps by 74r H1000 top left (speed known before hand)...

The Berger 170 pushed by 77grs of Retumbo...three bullets through that hole lower left on the top right pic...the top bullet impact... I do not know...I stopped at four Shots...I already used up my luck...

Then the 170 pushed by 74gr of 7977...lower left

Shooting out of the back of my pick up at 5300' and no wind...

From last month...the 170s pushed by 70gr H1000 at <3000fps, the lower right...

A lased 104 meters...

Do not know what forum to post this to...but I have to give Big Jake some hope...

Got a Magnetospeed 3v for my anniversary. Got to love a woman who sees what I have open on my computer...

Anyways...My base round is 74gr of H1000 pushing the 165 matrix, and it groups under an inch and runs at 3150fps with my Pro Chorny...With the Magnetospeed that load runs ave 3239fps with an ES of 70. Wow.

My other base sighter is the 150SST pushed by 76 gr of H1000. The Pro Chrony puts this round ave 3340fps....the Magnetospeed ave is 3381 and an ES of 44.

I actually did get the 4" plus groups that Big Jake got with the 170 Bergers...However...

In my 270WBY 28", 1-9 barrel...

The groups tightened up when...

I ran 77gr of Compressed Retumbo...Ave was 3207 fps with an ES 15. Sub inch as I was shooting 200 yards today...

Ran 73grs of MagPro...got the Russian Mag primers to ignite the powder...ave 3223fps with an ES of 17...also grouped less than an inch at 200 yards...

74 grs of H1000 ran ave 3239fps with an ES of 12...sub inch at 200 yrds...

Using neck sized brass with the Wolf Mag Rifle Primers...170 Bergers@mag length 3.36"...Using RCBS electronic Chargemaster to measure the powder...

Is this Magnetospeed the real deal?

Longtooth32,

My apologies I missed your questions. Mag length isn't much more than the 3.403 coal Berger lists on data sheet. They feed well so i called it good as a starting point. It's a blind staggered feed i built and kind of a pain to measure accurately without separation from bedded stock.
I can't get close with wby freebore either.
I had RL 25 on hand, bought some Retumbo and RL33. I couldn't get H1000. RL33 seems to be the tits in my ladder test of the three. Closely followed by Retumbo but I'm getting slight extractor smudge at (71.7). So backed up to 71.5 & 71.2 for 2-5 rd group test. It seem the higher the powder charge the better they shot. With RL33 the top end was where it was at also. So I did 5 @ max and 5 @ .5. Off max for group test. Next nice day I'll get out back on my range and test them.
I haven't shot the 165's . The Imr powders seem to hit pressure before hitting peak fps for me in general compared to Alliant and Hogdens powders. I have my reservations on trying 7977 due to that.
Over all I was surprised at how small my ladder test was. Again it seemed the harder they were pushed the tighter the ladder was in general.

You guys finally got to me. I just received a 30" 1:7.5" twist 0.277" barrel from Brux. I have 300 170gr. Berger EOL and a few left over 180gr NWCP rebated boat tail bullets to get started with. As soon as I find a local gunsmith that I can trust with my .270/7mm Rem Mag reamer and new barrel, I will be able to play.

That is wild…why did you get such a fast twist? Is there a source for those 180gr bullets?

At 30", you should almost get to 3300fps with the 170s...
