Considering I typically only used my 338LM for 2K, I'm taking it this year on my whitetail hunt. Shots aren't even close to where the rifle shines but even at 250/300 yards, the 230 ELD-X I'll be using should perform fine. I don't get it out much in fall unless shooting Steel plates or paper targets. May as well get a little blood on it. Planning a PA Black Bear hunt with it eventually. After speaking to a few guys that hunt bears out there, they hunt mountain top to mountain top. Spotting till a bear is located then take the shot. Shots range from 1000-1500 yards. Depending on wind will depend on if shots are even doable. It'll be a blast tho just waiting on bears and glassing hillsides for feeding bears.Yeah I got a couple deer with my Lapua View attachment 212968
The deer in that picture were shot 202 225 or so the one doe with her innards hanging out was shot about 413 Not Long Range by any means but you got to take them where they come outConsidering I typically only used my 338LM for 2K, I'm taking it this year on my whitetail hunt. No doubt. They sure don't have the slipperiness of the 285s but after shooting them at 1000, they don't play well in wind. My max shot with it wouldn't be beyond 350 regardless where I'll be setup338 with a 230 eldx will be the hammer of death to at least 700 yards if you call the wind right
Sounds like the same rifle I'm building next. The 300 PRC on the LSS Chassis. Rem 700 action. 30" Broughton 9 twist M24 Barrel. Can't put it in the same class with the 338 LM/RUMs but it's definitely a great LR hunting cartridge. Look forward to getting started on it.I'd much rather a 338 in my guides hands than a 30 or 7 anything in big bear territory. Having a 338 will also open up some angle shots a smaller caliber will not do. When comparing the big bore 7's and 30's to a lapua or norma it's a tough call. Get one of Kirby's allen mag or the XC and compare a 300berger @ 31-3300fps to the 245@3-3100. Add in diameter and a higher sectional density and the 338 walks away from it. If you do use a edge lapua or norma barrel life compared to the 300 rum is quite a bit better as well. Not to mention standard twist rate vs custom.
With modern brakes recoil is really a wash feeding them both will also be a wash until you get to the cheytec and XC based cartridge.
I have a PRC that I have not shot yet. 30" in a lss-xl which is going to change most likely before I get it broken in. It's a sweet set-up but it will not deliver the energy a 338 will with the same barrel length.
I'm with you. If someone has confirmed bc with a chronograph over distance that'd be amazing but until then I too have learned not to "just take their word about it". Nosler finally had to smarten up about that, which in this day and age of Doppler verification is long overdue. I like Nosler bullets but that still bothers me, Bryan litz's tests found Nosler and Barnes to be among the guiltiest of exaggerated bcs.Ok so I'm looking at these Bandlands Bullets. Someone stated they have a 338 Headhunter 285 grain bullet with a 1.01 BC. This would be really nice if it were true. I thank its to early in the game to believe the hype. There is no date to back it up yet. As of right now it is just hear say on the claims. Time will tell. It all ways does. (( I'm texting while I'm reading their web page )) Reading a little more. Apparently the company has been out sense around 2011. I feel that's adequate time. Almost 10 years but yet still no data. Can anyone shine some light on me with these bullets. Please only people that has used these bullets. People that have shot them. False claims solve nothing, nor do they prove anything. Thank you in advance.
Yes sir I agree With all the above. Everybody has always been chasing Berger's for ever. I do believe there are some good ones out there now. Wasn't Nosler off by Over 100 BC. I used to have a magazine article that talked about it but that was years ago. I can't remember.I'm with you. I am thinking that would be awesome in a Single-Shot Specialty Pistol!!!!The new Badlands 285 gr 338 cal target bullet is the ICBM and the hunting hp aluminum tip version is the 270 gr Super Bulldozer, I've taken two Alaskan bull moose with the hunting bullet with phenomenal results and Badlands have recently updated the design for better expansion at longer range/slower velocities, with a bit better bc, might be testing the new 30 cal bullet on moose in the next few weeks
The cartridge is called the 338 Headhunter and yes it does exist..... along with the 300 Headhunter and others coming ...
Designed for Remington 700 actions on a mag boltface (300 Win Mag etc) with approx. 140-142 gr case h20 capacity to directly compete with the 33 XC (138 gr h20) without requiring an expensive custom 338 Lapua sized action/boltface, you can run the Headhunter reamer into a RUM/Edge chamber and good to go in single shot mode with no other action or boltface mods ......
