Anyone familiar with this...

I believe the picture in your original post is of an Aero Precision M5E1 Rifle, which is actually a larger .308 sized AR10-style rifle, not a regular AR15.
Did you want a regular AR15 in .223/5.56? Also, if you can snap a couple pictures of the rifle in the shop I miiight be able to identify the make.
Is your budget $700? If so, there are some good options out there. You said you were looking for an AR15 for recreation. So I think Aero Precision Rifles may be in your range and are great guns. Palmetto State Armory makes budget friendly guns that also do the job nicely, my friend has one from PSA and it's been very reliable.
You can purchase any of these AR15s online and have them shipped to your local gun store, and they can help you through the process.
If you are looking for an AR15 that will see harder use and requires the UTMOST in durability or performance, then my recommendations would be different. But for recreation, PSA is good, and Aero is great!

I just pick up a Stag. Nothing fancy, just a plain flat-top for plinking at the range and something for the wife to shoot. I guess that is the beauty of the platform, easy to customize to what you want and to fit any budget.

I will go by the store tomorrow and see what kind of ar it is...I know I took pictures before of two styles..same maker.....just can't find the pic now....
Then I will swing by the local ar guy and see what he has to say about stuff on his wall....

Found a picture and name brand.... 2584.jpeg
Diamond Back.... .223/556
And conversing with local guy at moment.....

GUN GUY says the rifles are solid shooters..triggers are okay..but he says the stock is a weak point.....foreend is aluminum...butt is probably poly....

Gun guy has an AR10(308)and a 260 barrel...he knows I have a ruger compact 260 and a xp100r in 260....
Would it be worth going 260 in the AR10...

If you have disposable 260 then hell yeah! But really depends on what you want.

I love ar10s

Big advantage to .223 is ammo price and maneuverability, but doesn't sound like you're going to be all tactical playing army and such with it anyway.

Cranking through a magazine of .223 is a hell of a lot cheaper at a quarter a shot.

I personally think 700 is high for a diamondback. I would buy a ruger or s&w for 500 and have it coated whatever color makes your fancy first.

Whacha mean by disposable 260.....brass....yeah...quite a bit of remington been loaded a few times....getting to end of cycle of life...
.25 shot sounds good though....
But now I have a guy with a remington 700 weatherby mag with dies brass and scope for $700....for that price...tough choice...but the ars will be around for a while......

AR platform rifles tend to eat up the ejector lip of the brass leaving rough spots on it, after a few firings, the rim can become quite chewed up and unusable. If you decide to go with an AR10 in .260, but a brass-catcher and you will see what I'm talking about.

If you want one just to cheaply plink around with and keep for home defense, and for your wife to shoot/plink with, then I would stick with an AR15 chambered/stamped in 5.56. You can shoot .223 in a 5.56 chambered rifle, but it's not recommended the other way around, so if you want to shoot commercial .223 and cheap milspec 5.56 ammo, get a rifle with a barrel that's stamped/chambered for 5.56 NATO. Factory loaded 5.56 ammo is cheap, brass is cheap, bullets are cheap, and recoil is non-existent. So, if brass gets chewed up after a couple loadings, you can toss it and it's no real loss.

I cannot recommend Diamondback rifles or handguns... If you're looking for inexpensive with good quality, I would go Aero Precision, Spikes Tactical, or BCM (Bravo Company Manufacturing).

Or, you can buy that LWRC DI that I linked you to. It will be the most reliable of all, and has features that rival most $2,000+ AR's.

Ah Diamondback. Ive got to be honest, i have no personal experience with them, but Im not sure i would recomend them, especially at $700. There are better options for that price. I would take a PSA over a Diamondback, and an Aero over a PSA. All of which float around the $600-750 mark.
The brown buttstock in that picture is the ATI Taclite stock. The black stock is of similair quality but i dont remember the make. They get the job done but theyre not "nice" stocks persay, just okay. Still, I doubt they would give you any problems though. Its the Bolt carrier group, and barrel/chamber im worried about on those rifles.
At this point, knowing what we know now I would take a good look at other options, namely PSA and Aero. BCM was also mentioned, BCM costs a little more but are top quality rifles, my BCM is my favorite AR!

Well I went to the shop...but so did everyone else in town...
Bought a pound of rl26 to try later.... but unable to speak with the man....
Went to look at the 7weatherby....it was an older much used up and beat up rifle....not close to anything I would buy.....
So awaiting next trip to AR land....maybe tomorrow....

this was pretty much my thoughts. i've built 9-10 AR's. have them in 223/556, 9mm and 6.5CM plus a 762x39 about half built. they are fun little toys, especially my 9mm which takes the 33rd glock mags. there's pretty much no recoil.

i've got all sorts of different price points. one that cost about $350 all the way to one that cost about $3k (rainier arms billet upper/lower, geisele trigger, BCM barrel/rail/gas block/buffer tube, spring and an ACOG on top). i gather all the parts i want and assemble it all myself.

$700 seems step for what you're getting. if i were you, i'd look at a S&W mp15 or a ruger AR556. both can be had for $500 or so if you watch for sales. prices have gone up a tad with all this gun debate going on. nothing like after sandy hook though.

any milspec AR trigger is most likely going to be garbage, but good news is that there's tons of aftermarket stuff out there. PSA has a polished trigger for $30 that i run in my AR that is a great replacement. i've got a $200 timney in my 6.5CM that is orgasmic to shoot. very crisp. the rifles i mentioned above can be shot a bunch, then you can change out stuff as you decide what suits you.

Oh i forgot about the Smith and Wesson Sport and Ruger 556! Excellent options. I got a buddy who loves his SW Sport! And very affordable. I would definately suggest the OP look into those! They tend to be at a lot of gun stores too if ya poke your head into ebough stores or make a couple local calls im sure you will find one.

I've got Rise Armament RA-140's in my LWRC M6 and my Spikes lowers... Caught them on sale for $95 each @ DSG Arms (on their email flyer) , and for that price, I have ZERO complaints. Very clean and crisp 3.5 lb. single-stage triggers, and very good construction and finish-quality. Topped them off with some KNS pins, and all is good.

With no forward assist and no dust cover, I'd exclude the cheapest S&W models (unless they have recently added those items to the rifles)...Especially since he wants it to sit around for home protection (dust & stuff). Some folks don't care about the FA and dust cover, but in an emergency/SHTF situation, I'd rather have it and not need it, than deal with a sticky chamber and a jam without being able to ram it home and start firing. Just personal thoughts.
