Action blueprinting?

If you don't have an action, buy custom. Building off a 700 is a thing of the past at this point with so many action on the market @$750 on up unless you have someone that can blueprinted cheap. Resale is not even comparable. Blueprinting is not going to remove the slop you are trying to mitigate

Yes precisely. This is the obvious point. Of course there are many people who care about status. If you have a 700 and wish to build something that performs as good as any clone and want to save money than run what you brung. My 700s print the same groups as any of my customs and I like new/different chamberings. No need to spend $1000 on an action every time i want something new. This is where my 700s fit great.

Run what you brung, that's what I'm talking about

I think blue printing is a good option if you have an old action lying about, that you want to accurize.

However, I don't typically stop there. I'll square up everything, then I usually get a thicker lug to match the type of chassis or stock I'm using, and double pin it, then recoat it.

I've recently just started pulling off the bolt handles on donor actions to fix the caming on the ones that had poor primary extraction.

So before blue printing, I would consider that or getting a PTG bolt which now adds to the cost making one of the foot printed actions probably the better way to go.

40 years ago most people including me just put a barrel on their 700. The gun smith typically squared the bolt face, changed the injector and squared the receiver. Add a trigger and stock and that was our custom rifle.
I just put a new barrel on a model 7 ,with no action work. It shoots great. So I start adding up the cost of complete blue print of bolt and receiver new firing pin. It is good enough, been down the road over and over.
Their are great buys in the classifieds where people put 4k in a 700 build and now for sale for 2K.

The resale always takes a bigger hit than going with a nice clone action. That point was made earlier in the comments. Accuracy and precision being all the same on both premium clones and blueprinted actions, people are always going to want the " Gucci" action more. Nothing wrong with that

Here is the opposite argument, and this is coming from a complete custom guy, why sell it or even put that cost in your decision. Rebarrel it if you decide on something different.

Well first of all I'd never sell this action it's got sentimental value to me. But you are absolutely right don't sell it just slap a new pipe on it. However, something is forgot to consider is being able to buy pre fits if you go with a new fancy action. Especially those which allow you to change the bolt face.

Your smith should be able to spin you up barrels based on his measurements from the original work.

We'll see. I'm not saying it won't happen because of the numbers. But few do a build nowadays on a rem700 compared to customs around me. Besides, everyone does them different. Everyone considers them "blueprinted",there's very few that I would trust that do a true blueprint. We"ll just disagree a little they are dying just like the 30.06 is.

Unless it has sentimental value building off 700's is great only if you hate money. Model 70's might even be worse and I have a soft spot for CRF 70's but the one I had built ended up costing about as much as a custom action by the time it was done. Cool build but never again.

If you're balling on a budget you can still find the occasional deal on a Tikka. Way better factory action to start with then a 700 (provided the cartridge you want fits good in them) and everybody is spinning prefits for them.

Pacific tool and gauge. Or any other company that does aftermarket bolts. I'm not trying to sell them.

Unless you're like me and try to do most of it yourself, by the time you get done with tooling yourself, and have a tig welder, and jigs, and stuff to facing the bolt etc, you're going to around 7x the cost it would be just to buy one of these bolts and go from there.

Other reasons you might do this is to change out to a mini m16 (or something like it) extractor on a LA barrel after you get tired of replacing the riveted one…

Well passing off your experience as a catch all isn't necessarily the truth. That's all I'm saying. "Around you" is the the key! It's not a disagreement at all sir it's just what you see around you!

700s are well represented all over the place and will continue to be. So much so that they are cloned by everyone!
If you own one already they are a much cheaper alternative plain and simple.
