7mm STW Reloading Thread

i watched the video on the bullets by hornady. They sound good, but it seems that alot of people have been hitting some really long targets consistantly already. Are these new bullets really that much better?
These should fly better than anything Hornady has ever produced to date and perform very similar on game as the interbond and interlock.

They should be everything many of us were hoping for out of the Accubond Long Range and of course were let down.

Keeping fingers crossed.

So I need just a little direction with my new bang stick. Mod 70, brand new Hart Barrel, 1-9 twist, 26", sendero contour, 6 straight flutes, timney trigger set at 2 lbs and a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22. I know some of this doesn't matter but details....

I am working up a brand new load and have two bullets picked out. Berger 180 VLD and Nosler 160 AB. I have a couple other .284 bullets. I think they are the 168 and 175 Nosler Lang Range? IDK. Anyways, today I loaded up 3 loads with Retumbo 72.0, 73.0 and 74.0. Three of each with the 180. Nosler brass. Just thought I would try that powder and see how it does. The furthest I could get the bullet out to fit in the mag box was ~3.70. I do not have an COL gauge so I have no idea how far it is from the lands and really wanted it right up next to them.

I would like to load up some more for my first range session. Looking for load suggestions using the following powders. Or if another is suggested, I will look for it and try it.

I also have 7828 (SC I beleive), H1000, RL 22, H and I4350.

I do not have to have a load chosen until probably this summer.

This is a hunting rifle I have built for my Dad. He is 65 and it takes him a bit to get up the hill Elk hunting. So, I have places that I can put him and he can see up to 1200 yards. I do not think that distance is realistic for him, but I thought maybe I could extend how long he gets to hunt with me by putting him out in the field in a blind/bush and letting him poke a Bull/Buck from a distance from whatever he feels comfortable with. I do all of his reloading, skinning, gutting, packing etc. He rides his horse, hikes and kills.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!

If it were me I'd wait till I could get my hands on some Hornady Interbonds. They should be back in the stores soon.

For next year though I'd sure give the new Hornady ELD-x a ride once they start hitting the stores. Based on what they told me last week I'd expect to start seeing them between mid Jan-mid March.

Another great bullet on heavy bodied animals like elk is the Peregrine "Plains Master". They are made in South Africa where I first tried them when I had a problem with Sirocco's not expanding properly on plains game and a friend recommended them.

They have a first shipment of about a half million setting on pallets waiting to ship to the US as soon as they get final approval for their import licence which should be in the next 90 days or so.

Next year we're going to have some exciting new options but right now the Accubond, Accubond LR and Hornady Interbond (in reverse order would be my preference) are about the best that are out there.

Some of the guys here like the LR-X by Barnes but it's not a bullet I've shot enough to speak on.

Marble try loading the same you have already with Retumbo and the 180 Berger but get up to 77-78 grains. My load is 79 grains which is over Berger max in their book but it gets the velocity I want and good accuracy. I shot 3 each at 77, 78, and 79 grains. All shot well but the 79 also gave the velocity I wanted.

Fabulous!! I think the gun should shoot everything pretty good. So I'll be looking for that balance between accuracy and velocity. Accuracy being more important.

Find some Viht N570...It is by far the best powder in the STW with heavy bullets. Nothing will out perform it.

Just a little tid Bit of info for the 7STW lovers including myself.. no I will not give powder charge barrel twist or COAL or any of that cuzz im still testing and I can hear it now """no way your getting that speed BLAH BLAH BLAH """"" But just saying the stw will make this bullet get after it !!!!!
My spec'd reamer

retumbo
26" proof SS barrel, stiller Predator Single shot action

I have thought about the 195s but I have a box of 180s I'm going to give a shot first.

I set my STW shell next to my 300 WM and it seemed like the STW was substantially larger than the 300. Anyone know the volume difference between the two?

Planning on shooting in the morning.

Brand new barrell.

Brand new load.

Brand new gun...
