7mm STW Reloading Thread

I just loaded 73-75.4 gr retumbo by .4 with 180 gr bergers at 3.612 per Bean and I'll let you know how it shoots. It's a win 70 with 28 inch bartlein. We will we Monday.

Well -- Seymour it is, I guess. You ever drive over to the Ponderosa in Dickens for their brisket?
No but I have stopped by there a few times on my way to Lubbock.

I grew up in Farwell and spent a lot of time driving back and forth between Farwell and Throckmorton in my youth so we got lots of chances. My dad seemed to get a speeding ticket every time he drove through Haskall County so we usually took the northern Route instead of taking 380 to Post and turning up 84.

Now for a serious question.

I've been using 80 grains of Retumbo and Sierra 160 grain spitzer boat tails in my Model 70.

I recently scored a box of Berger VLD hunting bullets, 180 grain. Somebody said 74 grains of Retumbo behind that bullet -- but is that a minimum or a maximum load?

And -- how do I determine the COAL? I mean, these bullets are LONG. I guess I could simply seat one pretty long in an empty case, and then chamber it, with the idea that I would find the dimension to the rifling. Somehow this seems a bit "iffy", especially if the rifling grabs the bullet and pulls it out of the case.

Somebody give me a clue here, because it's warm enough for me to go out in the garage and start pulling that lever!
If you want to have a repeater just load them to the length of your magazine measuring tip to base.

Thanks for that info, but unfortunately powder is about impossible to find here in town, and I have a little bit of Retumbo left, so want to try that first.

Research continues...
Call Sharp SHooter Supply in Lubbock and see what they have on hand. They keep a pretty good supply and get regular shipments.

So I called them. No Retumbo in stock. Now I'm researching to see what else might work. Maybe RL-22?????
I would use 7828 before RL22. 7828 is only 1 notch above RL25 on the burn chart, so it's slower than 22, for the heavier bullets.

I can't believe you can't find 7828 or 7828 SSC.... Even during the great powder drought of 2012-2014, I was able to find 2 powders... Hodgdon LeverEvolution and IMR 7828 SSC. That's why I swapped pretty much everything to loads with 7828 SSC...Because I can always find it at my LGS.
