7mm STW Brotherhood - For those who shoot the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner

I just looked on line & Magnum is also the top accuracy & velocity powder listed for 160 grs by Barnes.

Yep, used a pound in my last stw back when they called it BIG BOY. It was good, but nothing special. 3200'ish on 160 with fair accuracy. I keep going back to reloader with the stw.

Hello;

I talked with Frank at Bartlein barrels, about building two Custom Sako Rifles.
One with a never barreled Sako pre- Garcia Action and the other one on a Sako M85. Both in 7mm STW
Looking at Twist rates Frank said 1-9.5 would be good up to 175 gr and the 180 gr would require a 1-10 twist. gun)
My question to you all, how would the 1-10 handle the lighter bullet wieghts ?
I looked at Layne Simpson's original article, which he stated the first rifle built
for the 7mm STW was with a twist rate of 1-10
I have a Custom .358 STA which is a beast and knocks the hell out of Elk size game , so I am looking forward to adding his little brother to the fold.:)

The 10 twist is borderline for the 160 and heavier But if its elk your after I would go with the 9twist and use the heavy bullet anyway ....you cant go wrong ....I took one with a 160gr nosler partion and she never took a step

Tom,

I think you need a 1-9 for 180s. A 1-10" could only work if velocity was suffecent to over come the twist deficency.

I'd build a 1-9" cause it could handle every bullet out there, except for the 195g Berger Hybrid that is due to come out where a 1-8" twist is needed.

I would go with the 1 in 9 to 1 in 9.5 for all 7 mm bullets.

If you go with a 1 in 10 you will have to stay with bullets lighter than 160 grains for consistant
performance.

The best all round barrel twist I have ever had for the STW has been the 1 in 9,25 eight groove.
It shot everything very good (I have never tried the 190s but they should do well).

Slower twist shoot well when loaded with the preferred bullet but can be very finicky and bullet selection can be difficult sometimes.

My Laredo ...or should I say Black67's Laredo is a factory 9.25 and it is awesomely accurate

Thanks for all your input:D
Now the next question Barrel Contour gun)

You will probably get many different opinions on this but this is mine.

For the Large ,powerful cartriges I like a barrel with at least a 3" to 3.5"shank
and a minimum contour with a .700 muzzle diameter. (Something near a #5 Lilja)

I personally like the #6 or #7 Contour ( .750 and .825 at the muzzle)

That depends on what weight rifle you are wanting to end up with.
If you are a sheep hunter on foot for a week in the mountains my guess is that you will not enjoy carrying a big fat heavy barrel around with you?
Like wise if you are doing a heap of shootin at the range it is no good having ultra slim spaghetti noodle type barrel either.

Good luck with the build.
Regards Steve.

I have just started reloading and have 7mm stw I want to reload for any suggestions for bullets and powder combinations to start with for hunting whitetail deer in North Carolina. I don't know rate of twist for barrel I bought it used and is Weatherby mark v deluxe action with custom barrel. If somebody could tell me how figure out the twist I would as I know it is important for bullet weight selection. Also does anybody know a good place to get brass for it?

Easiest way I've found is to pull a cleaning rod through the bore with a brush on it. Mark the rod near where it's coming out(action or muzzle-doesn't matter here) and pull it until the mark is at the same spot rotation wise again, say 12 o'clock both times. Measure the distance after you mark again, and that's roughly your twist.

For deer sized game, most of the 140- 160 grain loads in the previous pages will work well, with rl22, 7828, retumbo, rl25 and a few other powders being notable. Keep her close to full (charge wise)and use enough primer and you'll be fine.

Awesome Riverman, where are you going and how did you get the tags. I've never shot an Elk and I'd like to get a tag next year. Got any pics of the rifle?
