I have a Rem 700 Sendero with a 26" Rem custom fluted barrel with brake. Topped with a Burris Signature series 8.5-30 x 44 scope. Haven't worked any loads up yet except 140 Nosler CT with 79 grains of RL 22. Any suggestions for Barnes 140 ttsx bt. And Berger 140 vld? Also what are some good loads in 160 grainers.
Also I can get my hands on a bunch of new Remington brass if anyone is interested.
Well, the load you have been shooting is nearly one of my favorite loads, and one of the most fatal ones at that. I have been having great luck with the TSX recently. If you want to shoot the RL22' drop one grain from what you are shooting now, and try that.
I have been experimenting with rl25 and so far I am impressed with it. It dosen't seem to be AS temp sensitive. My load has been right at 81.0 - RL25 -140 TSX, 215 GM federal primer@ 3.665. They fit in the box, and shoot well. The same load shot well in my Winchester Sharpshooter, but I was only shooting two shot groups with that gun. Back to back two shot groups into less then 1/2 groups @ 100 yards.
Another powder that is not to be forgotten WITH THAT BULLET WEIGHT is 7828. I like it in 140-150 weight bullets, but you can do better with other powders with heavier bullets.
Another bullet that you may want to consider, is the 154 Hornady Spire point, ( flat base)" these things are like lasers in a few of my STW's. I have not killed anything with them yet, but I'm going to set one of my rifles up with them soon, which will be for that rifle only, and the other one will be set up with 140 TSX. I also have a box of 140 TTSX's, but have not tried them yet. Bought them at a gun show in the summer, but did not fool with them yet. Wanted to wait for cooler temps.
H-1000 is also a good powder to experiment with, but sometimes, and more often then not, you are better to pick a powder, bullet, case, primer combo, and manipulate the variables, until the load comes around. Pick the favorites, and work it out. Clean cool barrel for testing, and you will find your load, no doubt about it!!!!
As far as the Berger 140, with the speed potential, I am afraid of them. Now at the risk of being " Chastized" in my experience, if you drive them at over 3200 fps, they grenade on impact. You have a potentially 3400 fps load, that may shoot like a lazer, but you will also have a tracking job on your hands as well. Don't get me wrong, they are some of the most accurate bullets I have fired, but have had a few " less then" desirable instances that I would rather not repeat.
