7mm short action chamberings?

7mm in short action with standard bolt up to 160 class....7mm-08 is hard to beat without much fuss.
284 Win is the cats a** in a long action but would be only marginally better in the short action due to mag length restrictions.
To satisfy my curiosity. What can someone expect from the 284win with say the 145 lrx in the short action?

Sorry but I can't answer that because I don't run a short action 284 Win.
I have a couple on long actions and another barrel being cut for another long action.

The 145 LRX would have to go down deep in the case to fit in the short magazine which will take up powder space.

My thought is you will gain some but very little over a 7mm-08 with that bullet.

7-08 SAW…factory ADG brass…30d shoulder…SRP… can fire factory 7-08 rounds…flawless feeds…2700-2800fps w/150-160gr

I have about a dozen versions of 708. While I really like my 708 AI, the 708SAW is a top choice for hunting.

I'm leaning towards building a 7-08 in my JC Higgins Mauser, I'll concentrate on 180 gr class bullets. but if you're going to stay within 160 class then maybe this article might help you. https://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek095.html
Great article on SA 284 Win!
That may be a route for the OP to venture into.
I really love that 284 Win.

I've been torturing myself over choosing the cartridges the OP has. But since I have a 98 Mauser with a bad chamber 7-08 is a cheap/ easy option. 1-8" to 1-9" twist will allow me to use 180 ELDM's seated out. For ME a 1-8.5" twist might be the best option. Less powder to burn and a 7-08 gives me the option to use SRP brass too. But for the OP, or me for that matter a SA 284 would work well too with the possibility of 160 gr class going better than 2900 fps. And one could single feed 180 gr class bullets too. The torture continues lol.

So I have the action which is a 243 right now and leaning towards not having to buy a magnum bolt since I have a 7wsm already. Goals for this project are basically putting together an all around deer rifle. Quick deer drive type shots as well as get down and send one when the situation warrants it. I already have 7-08 brass so there is that part of the equation but to me that is not the deciding factor. Yet. ;).

One question I haven't found a clear cut answer to yet is the real world velocities from the 708 vs 708 ai in longer barrels.
You have gotten excellent advice/recommendations, but you need to narrow down your goal, i.e., 160 class bullet for an all-around deer rifle in .28 cal from a short action; what's your max range, timber or open country hunting, etc.?

Sometimes, we tend to overcomplicate things unnecessarily.
