7828 ssc what can i expect

Bought an unopened 8# can of it at a garage sale a couple of years back. It is the older long cut stuff but the can cost me $20.
It doesn't throw well but I trickle all of those charges anyway and it works great in my .300RUM.

Like those kinds of garage sales!

OK, so here are the results!
Conditions 30 degrees F, 9mph from 2 o'clock, gusts to 14mph

Hornady cases 3x fired
Fed 215
175gr ABLR
65.5 gr of both IMR7828 and IMR7828ssc

Shots were alternated starting with 7828, then 7828ssc, and so on.

IMR 7828
Shot 1 - 2886 fps
Shot 2 - 2863 fps
Shot 3 - 2869 fps
Average - 2873 fps

IMR 7828ssc
Shot 1 - 2891 fps
Shot 2 - 2863 fps
Shot 3 - 2860 fps
Average 2871 fps

So there you have it! Despite the small sample size, I see no significant statistical difference between the two. I was not concentrating on grouping because it was frickin' chilly, but the six shots grouped about 1.5".

7828 shot great for us during development in the 7rm. Like tiny, tiny groups. But it fell apart at different temps/elevations.

Fastest, and certainly most accurate in my 25.06ai. Single digit ES and SD. Perfect magnum powder, well balanced.

That is why I am switching to Retumbo if loads work out once I am out of 7812 Lincoln log cut now that it is discontinued

Ya it's a shame cuz it really is a great powder for certain conditions. But for us, as much as we wanted it to work, it just got too erratic. We thought we had it figured out for temp and elevation but it was hard to even mess with it anymore.

Once a rifle starts burning H1k it's usually game over.

H1000 is tough to beat, in fluctuating conditions, as well as H4831sc. They are the best of the best as far as temp sensitivity. They give respectable velocity, and exceptional accuracy as well. The Reloder series are off the shelf as well. I used to love rl22, but when Temps swing, bye bye accuracy. Sorry to be the bearer.... That's just my experiences, but a few others too. Ps, there's no discernable differences in the two powders velocity, just the ssc loads and meters a little better. I'll take ssc any day over the Lincoln logs.

I agree. I use it for a few of my stable mates, and I love it. I was referring to the slow burners, 19, 22, etc. RL16, is one of my favs.

RL 23 is temp stable vs 22
