7-08 Help

big game gives up 80 or so FPS to RL17 . I never had accuracy troubles with RL17 . this is a target from when I was developing the load . the top three spots are the RL17 in my rem rifle . left is 48.0 , center is 48.5 , right is 49.0 . shot from 200 yards . the big lower spot on the target is my Tikka using IMR4064 . also shot at 200 yards . at the time the tikka had a lower power scope , hard for me to shoot small with a low power scope .

My wife's older Tikka T3 in 7mm-08 likes IMR 4166 pushing the Eldx 162 around 2600 ish fps. Just tried 1000yd this morning. Kinda fun

I'll be running Big Game powder with 140gr Partitions or 120gr TTXSs for hunting loads. Rem 700 SS Mtn Rifle hasn't been picky with factory fodder so I'm optimistic I can come up with something suitable. I'd planned on sticking with Partitions and Ballistic Tips but the buzz is NY will be going lead free at some point so I'm trying to cover my bases.

What speeds are you getting with RL17 and 150gr bullets?

What are you hearing about NY going lead free? I hunt Jefferson county. May need to set up a rifle for lead free bullets.

What speeds are you getting with RL17 and 150gr bullets?

I never tried a 150 gr bullet . I tried the 168 Bergers , but I couldn't get things to come together .

I use 140 berger VLD hunting with 49.0 grains RL17 . from a 24" bbl I get 3080 FPS . this is above book max load . I use Norma brass , and get good brass life .

I messed with this for awhile . I couldn't get speed and accuracy to come together . I should have tried a few different powders before giving up , but I didn't . I could get good speed with average accuracy , or good accuracy with low speed . low speed doesn't interest me . I shot this target . I couldn't see any hits after 3 shots , so I walked out to see where I was hitting . I walked back fired two more but I couldn't get them with the first three . when I saw the needed elevation , I gave up . I then started shooting a ladder with the 140's .

No I have not, but I've tried the 168gr Classic Hunters with 43.5gr of H4350 and GM210M. I get consistent 0.5" groups. Don't know the speed yet but provably around 2,575 fps.

I have basically a twin in 7x57 in 98 Mauser action 24" barrel. Good success with Speer SP 145 IMR 4350 49.5 gr. 2900fps. longest shot on muley 385 yards.

I shoot both a regular 7mm-08 And the AI version. In my sporter weight rifle I got my best accuracy from 139 gr Hornadys and 140 gr Nosler BT's over H414. - dan

I had good luck loading a cut down 700 in 7MM/08 with Varget. Don't remember
the load now but it's in the book. 140 grain Nosler not partition. The grandkids killed
an antelope each and one deer all with one shot each.

Yes, in a Tikka compact, wife's gun.
Did get .75 moa most of the time.
H380 @ around 2,535 fps.
But then tried the 162 eldx with 4166 and Butter Beans crimp method. Big improvement from the 168 vld, now I want to try and crimp some 168's and see how they do.

I recently got a B&C stock to drop my Savage 7mm-08 sporter into and saw undeveloped handloads move from over 1.5" at 100 to well under an inch (.7-.8ish). Very encouraged with the improvements so now I've begun some true load development for this setup. FYI - always looking to learn more but...
