6.5 156 EOL

Any one using special seating stems for these long nose bullets. I pulled one out of the box and was seeing how it matched up to the seating stem and its has lots of room to move around. (hornady die).

Same here. If it is contacting the tip vs the bearing surface, just get an appropriately sized drill bit and drill the hole a little deeper. I had to do this with a hornady micrometer seating die stem for a .338 Norma mag using 300 grain Bergers, even their "eld" seating stem didn't have the hole deep enough for the bergers.

I use Ken Waters old trick of chucking a bullet in a drill, smear valve lapping compound on it, and then lap the bullet in the seater to get a matching fit. You can chuck the seater stem in the drill if your careful not to damage the threads. It can take more than one bullet.

That is good performance with a 20" barrel!! I'm using 49 grains for my 2940 fps, that isn't quite max, that was around 2980-3000. Mine are HBN coated, and that is where they shot best. I have really thought about building a 22" .260 AI for the wife to use for deer and elk, I think 2750-2775 with a 22" wouldn't be out of the question, and would do pretty good for elk out to moderate distances. I will see how they do on elk hopefully tomorrow morning!!!
I haven't shot these, but out of my 23in 260 AI I'm getting just shy of 2900 with 143 ELDX's. Using H4350, 44grs. Good info here, was worried how slow the 156 would be, but liking what I'm seeing.

I just picked up one of the Atip seating stems from hornady and it looks like it will do the job very well with 140VLD's and it looks like its going to work pretty good with the 156 as well.

Anyone have a COAL for a 264 win mag running the 156? Just seeing how deep these are getting seated on the case.

They are seated in pretty deep. This is .020" off a SAAMI spec throat. Using Retumbo though, there is still powder shake at max charge, around 3-4ish grains of room before it would be full. It would likely take something like Reloder 33 or possibly something even slower to be a compressed charge, even seated this deeply. I would be really interested to see what kind of performance you would get if you throated it out for this bullet and used a high energy slow burning powder. OAL is about 3.400" depending on bullet tip.

That almost what I measured out when looking at some SAMMI prints and trying to figure out how to make a dummy load for reference. I have the botail right at or the same length and this looks like it will still run in the Remington mag box. I wont know exactly until I get the rifle out of lay-a-way. Probably in 2 more weeks cause I don't make millions. Thanks for the info. I may also look at RL33 for a little more case fill but if I have retumbo, H1000, some RL33, and about 3/4 pound of RL26. I also have RL 23, and 7828. Not that I want to go down the rabbit hole of chasing that many powders but I do carry a mix when I was testing powders on my 6.5 Norma.

Mag box is plenty long, a rem 700 long action allows about 3.700" OAL. This build is on a Ruger m77 with 3.430" mag box, I may one day have it throated and install a remington mag box. I was going to try reloder 33 but have heard about issues with carbon rings and temp stability, and Retumbo just did really good in this gun. 26" Krieger 7.5 twist 4 groove.

I'll shoot some of the 156 through my gun just see how it does but I have a lot of 140's and with the 9 twist rate I'll probably fair better with the 140's. I just had bought a bag of 50 peaces of brass and just finished prepping them for now. They are in the tumbler right now. I may buy one of those Expander Mandrel dies by Sinclai so it can be the last step of the process after trimming. The 26 cal bushing on my trimmer is fitting a little tight in the case neck when trimming back the brass. I could also polish the bushing some also. I just want to keep the necks as consistent as I can. A few more steps and back in the bag till I get the gun in about 2 weeks.

Cody, that bullet looks like you are launching arrows. How long is it? It looks a lot longer than a 140.

My Manners stock isn't here yet, and found out yesterday that it is running behind, so I won't have anything to add to this thread for a few more weeks minimum. I hate waiting on the last item of the build. It stinks.

We finally got some cooler weather in Houston so I got to the range w/ my 264 and the 156. I'm very impressed w/ the results. Ended up w/ 68.2G N570 at 3095MV and just over 1/4 MOA at 200 yds.. Specs and groups in the file uploads. I'm very happy w/ this! These are 6" Dirty Birds. Last file was from yesterday when I went back to chrono. My throat is 0.165"

I am right there with ya. Have my complete barreled action/brake, bottom metal, trigger, base/rings and scope and all components/dies for a .338 Norma build. Waiting on the Manners stock I ordered April 15th....
