.358 Winchester experience anyone?

Makes learning to deal with recoil better than my .223, but I'm not going use it for an all day shoot at a prairie dog town.

That's for sure. A lightweight .358 win is not trivial in the recoil department.

That being said, it's surprising what is possible with a little practice though.

This is a pretty good drill, run pretty well, by a pretty good guy (thanks Angus!)

well if you want a hard kicking 358, the old winchester 88 was one I have a first year 358 in the win 88 it has been over 45 years in the cabinet it is the worst the browning LA was 1/2 at the sholder of the 88 I think it has a lot to do with the stock

Mine started out life as a Mark X 30-06. Pac-nor 22" barrel. Loved the factory 200 gr rounds so I loaded some up to their fps and put three sxs @ 100 measuring 3/8". Took it out a few weeks later and took an axis buck @ 150 yards. Entry behind the near shoulder and in front of the off-side shoulder. He ran about 30 yards and left a blood trail a blind man could follow.
I need to drag that thing out again for another axis

This is the online Hodgdon Manual version, maybe the manual you are looking at Deputy is a bought and paid for manual that I don't have or have access to.

For some reason I've stopped getting alerts on this thread. Anywho...so, I ended up ordering a Beast 4-port muzzle brake from Muzzle Brakes & More. Installed it yesterday and WOW what a difference. Feels like I'm shooting my old 22-250. Without it shot strings (groups of 3) above 2 or 3 at a time and I was ready to call it a day. I highly recommend Nathan's (LRH member "IdahoCTD") brakes!
There's absolutely NO WAY I can stuff the listed max charge (Hodgdon) of IMR3031 for a 200gr bullet into the Starline cases I am using and have a consistent seating depth. At 49gr the powder will actually push the bullet back out a little after seating it. So, after a little messing around I've settled on (for now) 47.0gr IMR3031 and .010 off the lands for the 200gr Sierra Pro Hunter. Consistently gives solid 1" groups at 100 yards and the last shot string of this combo gave a standard deviation of 4 and extreme spread of 9 to the tune of 2450ish fps......according to the Magnetospeed. Plenty good enough for a "woods gun".

I am using Starline brass with 50.1g IMR4064 right to the top of the case using a 200g RN SGK bullet seated to the crimp ring, Great accuracy. 26" barrel giving 2650fps: My hunting rifle for this year.

@Deputy819 - I always stop getting alerts to a thread after a few pages, even though I'm still subscribed. It's a pretty annoying bug.

As for your case capacity issue, Round Nose bullets are always shorter than Spitzers - this can yield a little more case capacity given the same overall length.

Glad you're enjoying the .358, thanks for the update!
