338 thunder project

I guess I could be accused of starting some crap here but I have to ask Tracer did he notice the name of this web site? LONG RANGE HUNTING. The topics covered in this web site should be rather self explanitory however I've noticed in a couple of posts you show disdain toward someone who would attempt a long range shot at game. I'm just curious why you would participate on a web site that promotes the very thing you appear to be against.

Tracer,

This forum is about long range hutning. Though it is about that there are not too many guys here that are trying to harvest large game at distances of a mile or more. Everyone on this board does like to shoot at distances that are father than normal but 1 mile shots on elk are the extreme.

I am not saying it is not possible and I am not saying that their arent guys here good enough to feel confident at that range. From my experince here most guys on the board would like to keep large game animals inside the 1k mark. This rifle that GoodGrouper is building will have the thump and accuracy potential to kill a elk around the 1 mile mark and he has proven before that he has the ability to shoot accuratly well past 1000yds.

I myself am hell bent on killing a prairie dog WELL past the 1 mile mark but I started this whole long range hobby just as a way to extend my deer hunting range out to 1000yds. Would I shoot at a animal past that mark, probably. Would I like to keep my big game shots inside 1k, most definantly. Could I hit a elk sized animal in the vital zone on a cold barrel shot in field conditions at nearly a mile away??? i dont know, but me and my buddy BJ Bailey can consistantly put a cold barrel shot within 1 foot of a prairie dog at 1 mile with the rifle's Kirby Allen built for us. So I think anything the size of a coyote or bigger at 1700yds might have a real bad day.

GoodGrouper, like many others here, has put a ENOURMOUS amount of time and money into perfecting his skill and manufacturing this particular rifle and I can assure you he and everyone else here takes long range hunting very seriously and would never want to make a animal suffer needlessly or endanger any other people.

I am sure if you read back through this topic and many others on this board you will see this strive for precision that I am talking about

take it easy

Bullet structure, bullet performance and shot placement are vastly more critical then ft/lbs of energy.

1500 ft/lbs was the standard when there was nothing but conventional cup jacketed bullets and alot of elk to shoot.

Now we have taken a more surgical stance at hunting, precision makes up for what seems to be a loss of energy and new bullet designs help even more.

You put a 230 gr bullet from a 45 ACP loaded to 850 fps in the chest cavity of a bull elk at 25 yards he will be dead very quickly. On impact the 45 ACP will have about 300 ft/lbs of energy at most, still the elk will die quickly if the shot is placed properly.

GG has more then enough energy to kill any critter on the planet with a well placed shot.

If you feel Long Range Hunting is not hunting thats your right to feel that way. I may add though that this is Longrangehunting.com. Far more feel the way GG does then side with your opinion.

That is not to say you are not fully welcome here because you are 100%. Just realize the thinking on this board is very like minded and may be different then what you feel.

Good Shooting!!

In reguards to foot pounds of energy it is a nummber on paper and has little to nothing to do with terminal ballistics. FPE does not kill anything.Penetration through vital organs and or central nervous system is what kills.Take a 250 pound NFL running back that is capable of running a 10 secound 100 yard dash this equates to 30 feet per secound and if you do the math you will see that 3504 fpe's is the amount generated. To sum it up if foot pounds of energy killed then the morgue would be full of football players after each game.

GG,

Thanks for the heads up.
I'll keep a watch to the west for the storm thats brewing.

3496.61 foot pounds... you're right, close enough!
Yes! Wound channel, shock wave, hydrostatic shock... these are the things produced by the bullet that kills, nevertheless , can this happen without energy? I think energy kills, without it the other would not be.

Hey GG, I have a question for you. First of all, I have to say I never read this post until tonight. I am glad I read it, it looks like the pot was stirred. I appreciate all of your advice and great stories. I can't believe people would try to agrue on this post. Once again, I appreciate all of your valuable information. Sounds like you are building an interesting rifle with the 338 Thunder. My question is, I will soon be receiving my 338 Lupa Improved (Yogi)built by D. Tooley in North Carolina, and I was wondering what powder I should consider using for this Monster. I will be using the 300 Sierra Match King and Federal Match Primers. My barrel will be 36" long and my goal is to get 3000 fps. I was thinking about Retumbo or VV-N560, any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, Wildcat.

I was in Utah last week as you well know and it snowed and I walk in sportsman warehouse to get out of the storm and when I went inside I heard and saw THUNDER! Now I know there has been alot of nagging by certain indivuals going on in this post, there better be some pictures of the thunder come soon cause I saw it. Where the hell is it! I still have a terrible covetous itch and I got to hold and fondle it. Any data would also be appreciated or when it comes available. Thanks for your advise on the Rock barrel. Kirby very nice work you are a artist in your profession. Just patiently waiting - Preacher.

For some unknown reason, this thread did stir the pot a little didn't it? Oh wait, I know why it got some people bent out of shape, because gg wrote it!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In all seriousness, anyone who has ever practiced at distance with a cartridge in this league would never debate the effectiveness of it. It never ceases to amaze me how people who HAVE NEVER DONE IT KNOW ALL ABOUT IT! You know the type. Macho as all hell and bent on ruining other peoples days.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words. SOund like your big boomer is coming along. DOn't worry about getting the 300 gr mk to 3000 fps. It will probably do 3100.

My only word of caution is DON'T USE ANY 5 SERIES VV powders. THey are triple based and hot as hell. Yes you can get great velos with N560, but your barrel will be toast in a matter of weeks-not years.

I got best results with 96 grains of RL25, but H1000 worked great too.

GOod luck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Oh boy, the cats out of the bag now. Ok ok, I have the thunder in my possession. I had Kirby next day air it to me because my brain was about to explode knowing it was done and not in my hot little hands.

Will get some pics on here in the next couple days if I can. My computer is not letting me login very well because the hard drive was rebooted and it won't recognize me. Might have to login as gg or something when I want to post pictures because my rebooted pc is the computer that has my digital camera hookup. Dang it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

GG,

If I may make a suggestion to you, shoot your computer at 2K
with the 338 Thunder, take lots of pictures and buy a new 'puter. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Congratulations on the delivery of the new rifle.
I, along with the rest, look forward to seeing lots of pictures and reading another one of you enjoyable stories.

Have fun!
