308 enough for brown/polar bear?

Well I can tell you African PHs and most full time guides get it right a whole lot more often than they get it wrong. There are a lot of dude hunters that owe their lives to the excellent skills of these people. The experience and expertise is so far above the average person on this or any other forum, it is hard to believe. Those of you making sport of the ones unlucky enough to get it wrong are really aholes with a far over developed sense of your own importance and knowledge. Take a step back and give your head a shake, your impotence is glaringly obvious
Once again, were you referring to me. If so I hope you enjoyed your little internet rant. I'll keep this civil. I don't take lightly to name calling. Particularly when you don't know a thing about me. You are free to not read my posts or hit the ignore button at any time.

Didn't mean to go off topic. Just trying to emphasize the lack of reaction time someone has when charged by a man and that the time can be even less when charged by an animal. You don't get much time to react.
EXACTLY !! This ^^^
And,. Hence Why, My personal "Choice" would Be, a QUICK, "Double Tap" from, a Double Rifle at, Under 50 Yards from, a "Charging",.. Anything !
Again, This would Be, MY own,.. Personal Choice, the rest of, you Guys can do whatever,.. YOU,.. "Think" is,. best !

I'm in total agreement…..just couldn't restrain from mentioning the human angle! Generally, humans move much slower than animals…..unless you're attacked by a Sloth! 😜 memtb

You made a good point and I completely understand why you would choose what you did. It's a solid choice. Bolt actions are slow.
For me an auto loading Beretta with large diameter buckshot or slugs would be my 1st choice because I am very quick with one and I don't have to get it to my shoulder to be accurate. That goes back to my trickshooting days. There aren't many brands of shotgun I would trust but I would trust a Beretta.

Thank You!

I really do like the .338 WM……but, the only one we have belongs to my wife! 😉 My favorite cartridge is a few popular diameters up from the .338! 😉 memtb
My wife inherited a beautiful little Miroku 20 over and under. Her dad always let me shoot it and I am lights out with it. It's like it was built for me. She refuses to let me use it! Go figure

The Russian bear "hunting" video was a bit disappointing. IMO that's bear shooting, no different than shooting rats in a barn.

I don't doubt the 7.62x39 in an autoloader would be suitable for bear defense. It's effectively a .30-30 or thereabouts, and putting 6 or 7 .30-30 holes in a bear's boiler room at close range would work. AKs are the favorite weapon of African ivory and rhino horn poachers... two or three poachers dumping their mags of FMJ into an elephant at close range will work... hopefully not before the elephant catches up with one of its assailants. Is the 7.62x39 a good choice? Not if something better... larger diameter, faster, with better bullets... is available.

I was very surprised some of the dogs didn't get hit. Certainly not the type of "hunt" I would want to be involved in.
