300 SHERMAN vs "06

It shouldnt be much longer. It was literally just something i wanted to do for fun so thats why i havent really pushed it along faster. I have all the guns i need. I just think the sherman lines are cool and very effecient. I guess with me not needing it as a primary target or hunting gun that there wasnt really any pressure to get it finished. Rich did offer to loan me his go gauge months back but i was just going to wait for mine to come in. Depending on the timeline of mine, i might take Rich up on his offer in the near future.

I hear you there for sure. That how most of my projects start from. This could be fun! When you get tit together I am sure it will be a blast to shoot.

That is a good increase over the old 30-06. Was that loaded to 06 max length? also what length of barrel?

Thanks
28 inch barrel. You would likely not loose more than about 15 to 20 feet per inch. It has a longer throat than tho '06 so coal is longer. I will have to check the length but likely in the 3.5 range.

Your gauge is in the mail

Your gauge is in the mail

Thank you Rich. I'm out in the Gulf of Mexico right now but will put it to good use when I get back in. I appreciate all of your help. If you end up making a deal on 6.5 SS brass I will be renting your reamer!! If not I will get a lighter weight 6.5 Sherman built for hunting since i'll already have the hydro die and gauge.

I really really want to build your 30/375 S.I. but I will hold off before i get into that much brass prep.

Just let me know. Your BAD luck should have about run it's course!

I was rereading my posts and I didn't want anyone to get the wrong idea.
Rich has been awesome at answering all my question by PM and cell phone through this whole process. At no time did Rich drop the ball(after he found the reamer lol. Just poking fun with ya Rich!). We have been waiting for the parts to be made. It has been a manufacturing hold up. When custom parts come into play it sometimes takes longer.

Nice I do have a 28 inch now so that would be the same. I am loading my 06 right now with a coal of 3.623" putting 57.5 grains of IMR4350 powder behind it and getting 2792 as the average FPS lowest is 2789 highest was 2795 in a 4 shot test. This was also in a barrel that had about 25 rounds through it from new. I think your 300 Sherman would really pick up speed over what I am doing. Man is it tempting!

With the Sherman the case should not stretch as much either. How close is it to the 30 Gibbs? I know your shell is longer. But what about case Capacity?

I bet those 178gr Hornady ELD-X bullets would be clipping along from a 30/06 AI, Gibbs or Sherman.

My factory Ought-6 can get them to 2700 ft-per second give take.
The Nosler 30/06 AI load data puts them into the 3000 mark.

Dosen't sound like much, but it adds that extra Harvesting range and freight train effect up close.
Hornady claims the 178gr ELD-X still gets fairly good expansion in the low 1600 ft-per second range,,, 900 yards @ about 1000 ft-lbs energy. Good category for deer size game.

600 yards is 2000 ft-per second @ 1600 ft-lbs energy.

The 212 ELD-X looks good to.
2800 ft-per second MZ
700 yards is 2000 ft-per second @ 1700 ft-lbs energy. Awesome for the thick skins.

1000 yards works out to 1600 ft-per seconds @ 1200 ft-lbs energy.
That alone is a game changer.

Any thing at the 350 to 450 yard door step would be taking quit a whollp, I see something like this on my next re-barrel.

From Western Canada Don of good times.

Case capacity is identical to the Gibbs but the Sherman is a FAR better design with a MUCH longer neck and less body taper along with the 40 degree shoulder. The 178 should very easily break 3100'.....Sherman

And this ^^^ is why I'm wanting to convert my .30-06 AI to a .300 Sherman.

How come when I google 300 Sherman, it takes me to Web sights like the Ackley Improved or Gibbs.

I tried the search in 30/06 Sherman and 300 Sherman both.

Maybe my search engine is not keen to this up here in these parts of the world.

Whats the difference 06Ai vs 300 Sherman? I assume your moving the shoulder forward. Any idea on h20 capacity of the Sherman? Whidden stocks dies or at least can has your print?
