300 rum vs 300 prc which is better

I have yet to see a 300prc (or any PRC really) that impresses me. All have been slouches for velocity. Easy to load for but slow comparatively. There is some wierd stigma behind them like they are super duper cool and impressive. They aren't. I have a 300winnie that outruns any of my buddy's 300prc. I'd switch the consideration to a properly throated 30 nos and you have a better comparison than the RUM. Of course not really because the 30nos wins. Hehe

As the case capacity of the 300PRC is about 5% more than the 300WM it is capable of slightly better velocity than the 300WM. However it is not a meaningful difference. Additional muzzle velocity improvement over a 300WM was not the point of the 300PRC. The point is the capability of shooting larger higher BC bullets. Not to mention the SAAMI spec'd twist rate difference. SAAMI to SAAMI it is an improvement on the 300WM over a quarter mile, that's indisputable. To say otherwise is just ignorant of fact. Now can you custom ream a 300WM to yield everything a 300PRC gives you. But you can't buy that rifle from a manufacturer you will need to go custom.

Keeping impact velocity at 1800 fps 100-125 yards tops.

The ideal spot in the RUM case is the 338, I'll do them all day long and twice on Sunday but you step just a little bit back from the 300 and 7s capacity you loose nothing but gain barrel life, throat stability, shootability, mag cycling if desired, just about eveything favors a PRC or Nosler, I'll build a 300 Norma way before the RUM in that capacity range!
The 338 RUM case is what the 300 RUM should have been imo. I really like the 300 RUM case but I never loaded the heavies. 190 Berger's were my bullet choice in that case and it's an amazing combination. I've never seen a .30 cal magnum I couldn't appreciate for the ways I intended to use them. My custom 300 win mag leaves nothing to be desired when compared to the 300 PRC's I've done. It was purpose built with a freebore similar to the prc. I knew how to get better performance from building it my way, but I'm not buying ammo of the shelf for it. I enjoy loading my own and find satisfaction in the process. The Hornady 300 prc has its appeal for those who don't reload and want to buy their ammo. In my experience it's been good in accuracy and terminal performance. Also it's been refreshing and a relief to guide those types of people into that cartridge. I no longer have to be bothered with helping them with their ammo. I've got way too many of my own to load for. I digress, back to the 338 Rum case. It looks like the op has elected to do a 300 Rum. Bust of luck with your choice and how you intend to use it. There is no wrong choice. Myself however, I'm on a 30-338 Rum journey and very soon will see if I've found another useful 30 caliber magnum for my intended purposes. Using Unknown Munitions dbm setup with the long xl mag box I'll have a length of 3.950". It should be a fun project. Hoping for 300 NMI or close performance. We'll see.

In the times we live in we really are picking the smallest details about a case to make our decisions. I've built so many Win mags I've lost count, I have a reamer I perfected for it years ago that a LOT of gunsmith use, with the brass available for it it's just that much better than it was but I find zero function for the belt or excessive case taper, that's all I need these days to abandon it. The Noslers same thing, built quite a few of them early on, I don't like the rebated rim, wrong throat and the early brass throttled it. The PRC is essentially a copy of Rich Shermans design off the 375, its as close to factory perfection as I can see, throating correct out of the box, no belt or rebated rim, lower case taper, easy fit in mags.

I agree the 338 RUM case is the case to use if your buying reamers.

I would really like a discussion of rebated rim or not.

I search for something specific and did not find it so I have created a thread specific to the subject.

What's wrong with a rebated tim?
Great slip. For Tam... Tim ;)

Re: Rebated rim, generally nothing "wrong" with it. The thread bellow is for discussing pros and cons.
