30 WOLF

S1

The BC of the 250 gr 338 is .567 as per Sierra. The 338 300 gr MK works out to close to .800. It is actually .787.
The 30 Cal 240 gr MK is .711
We have found that the 30 Cal 240 gr Sierra MK at 3200 FPS will out perform the 338/250 gr past 750 yards to 1800 yds all day long, but it won't touch the 338 /300 gr MK at at the same speed at any range.

As last year, the hold up for me would be the obligation to the Williamsport club where Carol and I agreed to do the stats for another year.

The same would probably hold true with Boyd as he is now an Officer and we must be there.

Maybe somehow we could do it though? As you know, I always go to Colorado hunting in late October and hate to make two trips within acouple months out west. I hate to drive and have a whole truck load of equipment when I go anywhere.

As an add on here, I see where people are talking about the 30 Wolf, 338 Yoge and the 30/378 capacity.

I shoot 122.5 grs of highly secret powder in my 338/416 Rigby IMP when using the 300 gr Sierra MK.
The velocity I have seen over my Oehler Chronagraph has been 3310 FPS.

I have a friend that has the same chambering with a 40" barrel that runs his at 3350 FPS and go higher. That too is with a 300 gr 338 MK.

These are strictly cold weather loads.

To the one poster that asked about the 30/378 and some loads, I had one with a 37" barrel that I ran 200 gr Mk bullets out of at 3600 FPS. That barrel is now on my Tomahawk, 34" long and still shoots well.
I used 117 gr of WC872 ball powder (like H870) with the 200 gr bullet. Start out low and don't go above 115Gr if you use H870.
Don't try that load in your rifle if it's hot weather.
In fact, I will not be responsible for anyone using a load in their rifle that I have had success with in the past and written about on this forum. Your on your own.

Count me IN! Bipods and All!

All I have to hear is when, where, and for how long!

Ric-- as soon as my significant other gets over her bout with 24 hour morning sickness, we will be enroute to Cody---probably sometime between Mid-March and late May--The later the better, as far as the PD's are concerned...

Boyd

Don't worry about those wolves, CJ says a Tomahwk can chop a wolf's head clean off!

Ok,

May, June is out for me as May is my employee training month.
I can do Oct. if early enough..

Boyd and Butch will most likely be in the area at that time as well. Hopefully hunting and doing a video for me.. so that may work out better as well..

If you boys can decide "when" I will do my best to provide the "where"

Hey DC... think the 30 Wolf can keep up with the really BIG DAWG.. 338/416.... I can't wait to hear that ring steel at 2000 yards..

I hope this happens as it would be a little friendly competition but a great learning expierience and and incredible information gatherer for all involved and this board!!

Wyo

If there is no restriction on barrel length, can I bring the Abrahms? How thick is that steel you got? Just curious.

When you all do it, you need to put someone on vidio camera duty at all times for the event. Those of us that would love to be there and can't make it would pay dearly for copies I'm sure.

I'll probably, hopfully, be working into late september-mid october road construction. My hunting season here will likely take a back seat as well.

Hello Ric

To answer your question;

"Hey DC... think the 30 Wolf can keep up with the really BIG DAWG.. 338/416.... I can't wait to hear that ring steel at 2000 yards.."

Will it make the trip to 2000 yds, most certainly.

I don't believe the 30m Wolf with a 32 " barrel is capable of propeling the 240 gr bullet as fast as mine will propel the 300 gr. If he can get 122.5 grs (or More) of powder in it he might come close.

The 30 Wolf case is not as big as the blown out 416 Rigby Imp case though.

Speed is not the important factor here for playing around. In hunting, we like the additional speed and retained energy. The 300 Gr bullet with the high BC will make the trip to 2000 to ring steel even if the speed is only 3000 FPS or less. I get 3300 FPS with the 300 gr if I don't care about loading my brass more then two times.

I would suggest steel at 1000 yds, 1500 yds and also 2000 yds. That way many shooters with smaller calibers can ring the plates too.

Take care

I know if Boyd or Butch can make it the Cameras will be there.. I'm sure copies wouldn't be a problem...

Like I said .. lets hammer out some details and this could be a really good thing for all...

Boyd

I would bet a lot of money you will make something, borrow something, or steal something, between now and then, and it'll work reeeeeel goooood.

There is no way the Wolf will keep pace with DC'S long rig in the energy department. We don't have anything barreled longer than 32". Accuracy and tissue damage at ultra long range are a different story. Me and my poor, little, short barreled Wolf, on a pathetic lowly bipod, does'nt hardly seem fair, up against all those big cannons, on those high dollar rests, with those awsome leupold scopes, and barrels that are heavy enough to justify a tank turret.

I am your Huckleberry!

You guys are gonna force me to break out the 253's ar'nt ya?

What altitude are we shooting at?

Wyo, are there any hard rocks I can use to rest my bipod on?

Accuracy and tissue damage???

If the accuracy wasn't good in my 338/416 I would have had it rebarreled long ago and the 2100 yd elk kill would not have been possible.

The tissue damage on the 2100 yd elk was unreal. One of the shoulders was completely penitrated and the bullet exited the far side of the elk. The exit hole was about the size of a big grapefruit. Long live the 300 gr 338 MK.

I hope you can find enough rocks for your bipod? Ric tells me his section of Wyoming is void of them.
You will be lost----Better bring some with you.
