270 Win 140 Bergers I need some help getting over 3000 fps 22" barrel?

A buddy from the range wants to shoot 140 Bergers at blazing speed from his 22 " lightweight Weatherby in .270 Winchester. I have tried MagPro and VV-560 and can get to 2900 before I start crushing powder. Has anyone tried Superformance, Hunter, VV N-550 or another and got over 3000 fps? I am competing against factory Hornady for velocity.

I run the 140 Berger in a 24" NULA/270. I use R22 and am in the 3050 range.

R26 would be the first place I'd look but for the most part I've found that much over 3K is pretty darn tough without going places one probably shouldn't with a 140 in a 22" tube.

Real world, tell him to run it at 2950 and call it a day, if he can't get it done at that speed he ain't getting it done with another 100 fps......!

RL-17/19/22 and N560 in my Berger reloading manual are powders with over 3KFPS but out of a 26" barrel. So 2900 FPS out your 22" might be your max. BTW, your load is no slouch.

I used to run H4831 in my 24" .270 w. 140s @ 3040fps. Or, a 150 NABLR @ 3023fps w. a moderate load of RL23.
RL23 is where I would be looking. Much more stable than RL22, and almost as fast.

I shoot the 140 berger classic hunter in my 22" Browning Abolt 270win. I load them .010 off the lands which in my rifle provides enough case capacity for 59g of H4831sc. This load gets me 3025fps with fantastic accuracy. It absolutely destroys deer, too

This is a timely post. I'm looking to load a Winchester featherweight with the 140gr Berger. Would like to try and get as close to 3000fps as I can but would settle for above 2900fps. Just looking for a solid 500yd and under load.
I have a few pounds of Reloader 26 so that's where i'll start.

I have only a few kernels of R-26. I just ran the numbers on Quickload, you can fill up the case and not reach maximum pressure and still burn it all up in 22 inches. I think I will try MagPro and VV N-560 next. I tried to fill the case with H-4831, the first powder I ever reloaded, came in a plastic bag inside a cardboard box from Hodgdon, and the short cut version might be a better fit. I don't have the short cut. I like MagPro in the .270 WSM but Reloader 26 is (Swiss Nitrocheme formula) is more temperature stable and repeatable.

3050-3100 is a tough sell with a 22" pipe and a 270 with a 130. I'd be looking at a wsm or roy if I wanted faster; it's nearly a sin to push this old girl that hard, especially with a 140.

RL-26 should be able to get you 3000 ft/sec even with a 22 in barrel. My Vanguard with a 24 in barrel has gotten me 3050 + with a 145 Hornady ELD-X. I was not at the max.

I haven't used the load in a long time, but 57 grs. H4831SC and the 140 Berger gave an average MV of 3002 in a Cooper 24". This load is slightly under max in the Berger book. Very good accuracy.

I started with the 140 bergers and liked the performance. I ran rl19 and imr 4831 I don't recall if I was over the desired 3k but…. A friend said try the 130 bergers you will love them and he wasn't wrong. Those things are screamers!

You might consider weight sorting your brass. I achieved 3126 fps by selecting brass that weighed 196-202 grains using 58.5gr of H4831sc for my 130 grain Berger Classic Hunters. The mv with 180 grain brass averages 3025.

140 gr Berger VLDHunting - 56.6 gr H4831 SC - 24" Lilja 1-10 twist MV 2960 fps. This was my accurate load so I stopped there. The rifle shoots the Hornady 140gr SST Superformance loaded ammo 3228 fps, if the rifle likes it and you could ever find the ammo this would be an easy way to go. One thing that might help is to figure out if the rifle wants to shoot faster or slower than "normal", could save a lot of grief to know that bit info.
