270 Win 140 Bergers I need some help getting over 3000 fps 22" barrel?

140 gr Berger VLDHunting - 56.6 gr H4831 SC - 24" Lilja 1-10 twist MV 2960 fps. This was my accurate load so I stopped there. The rifle shoots the Hornady 140gr SST Superformance loaded ammo 3228 fps. Nosler load manual for H4831SC and 140 grain bullets shows 46.6 grains as not quite max and their max load MV is listed at 2999 fps. My personal view is accuracy before MV, heck 2900 fps works fine and 100 fps more gets you little in practical value. Single base powders in a modest load will get you a little more barrel life than double base powders at max. Lastly its a light rifle, are you going to be steady enough to shoot from hunting/field positions and be accurate enough to get out to where 100fps means anything?
Agreed! H4831SC is one of my go-to powders. My .270 AI propels the 175 Matrix VLD at 2993 FPS out of a 30" Lilja 1:8" 3G barrel using 58g H4831SC and BR2. I reached near 3100 FPS, but the group opened up, and pressure started to show, so I backed it down to safe levels and found the best compromise between accuracy and velocity.

I have loaded Hornady 140BTSP in my rem 700 mountain rifle w/22 in barrel in 270 win at 3150, according to the chrono, using R22 59.5g. that is one of the loads I have loaded right now for deer. been shooting it for a few years.

I don't see where Berger was listing primers used. Most manuals will state brass and primers used. Would a magnum primer be warranted for RL-26?

I don't have the load in front of me, but I have always used RL22 in mine with 140accubonds. I believe I was just over 3000 with it. Accurate too out of a 22" M700 mountain rifle pencil barrel. I haven't shot it in 10+ years. I outta take it out and verify that load.

That velocity was repeated several times with the Chrono but I can't reverify it since I shot the Chrono last year with a 30 nosler. I was surprised when it read that fast and started a thread on here asking if that could be legit. It's accurate at any rate and has no heavy bolt lift. Need to shoot at distance to check drops.

H4831 is great 270 powder but not highest velocity. Reloader series (16,17,19,22,26) are faster and rl16 is temp stable. Not tried magpro with 140s but fast with 130s

Another vote for H4831SC for the .270 Winchester, haven't and don't expect to get my hands on any RL26, had my highest and safest velocities with H4831SC. But..... every Barrel, Chamber , Throat, Bore is different so....no promises,
bullet jump, primer, case brand(capacity) just as important
You can only load safely what (your barrel) will allow.
Not posting my rifle's load here...
But...utilizing winchester brass, cci200 primers, seating for a long jump to an already long throat to the lands.

In my opinion to really get the velocity out of a .270 at least a 26 inch barrel is essential. Secondly I strive for accuracy over velocity. I'm shooting a .270 Ackley Improved, 26 inch, 1:10 twist Lilja barrel. I can get 3100 fps with 150gr ABLRs, and easily get up to 3200-3300 fps out of the round. But....it's at the expense of increased pressure (brass) and accuracy!! Whatever your friend is going to shoot, it will never know the difference between the velocity that you/he is getting (2900fps) and the 3000fps that you are trying to attain. I've attached a photo of a target with the 150gr ABLRs @ 300 yards out of the .270 Ackley. We're shooting only two-shot groups due to the fact that the rifle barrels were contoured to the Ruger 77 barrel configuration so they are pretty light and the groups open up after two shots.

Hi I am just wondering, since I also shoot a Weatherby Ultralight in 270 win, if he has considered the 130 grain Nosler ballistic tip or the 130 gr . Nosler Accubond. I use 59.5 grains of H 4831SC and I believe my velocity is very close to 3050FPS from the 24 inch barrel using the ballistic tips ! I use this strictly for deer. My personal max range with that load is about 300 to 350 yards ! Is your friend wanting to shoot bigger game than Deer ? Is he wanting to shoot game at greater. Ranges ?

Lenny how nuch jump in either your WBY or Win M70?

So far the load data I've seen using Magpro and the Berger 140 has a COAL of 3.250". Are you at max loads when crushing powder? Makes me wonder how far off the lands you are and if you could seat out closer to 3.390". The book max is already at 64k PSI. So I'd be careful. Just some food for thought.
