270 SS Build

This week has seen significant progress! I got the stock shaped and finished. It just needs to be fitted with a recoil pad and will be completed! My Timney Trigger is on its way and I'll be ordering some dies with my next check. It's taken the better part of a year since ordering the action last year on Black Friday.

Looks awesome. I love the way the stock came out. The contrast of the fluted, blued barrel against the colors of the stock is really pretty. In a world of composite stocks it's a great combination of classic look and modern rifle building.

Looking good!
I filled my extra doe tag last week with my 270ss and 165 matrix. I'll have to see if I can post the video. Dropped her like lightning at 450 yards. I'm excited to see how yours does.

Thank you, sir! That's exactly what I was hoping to achieve. The carbon fiber bedding provides a tight and very rigid hold for accuracy and inhibits wood swelling, even though it's a beautiful classic walnut stock. The Elite Midnight Cerakote gives the highest protection, but offers a "satin blue" appearance. All the fluting saved a lot of weight and provided a more modern look. I wanted to marry old world style with modern technologies.

Rich sent me the video the other night. What a shot! Sadly, I didn't get out for much hunting this season. Was buried with family stuff most of September and October. Congrats on a nice doe! I need to move to ID and experience the higher quality hunting y'all have over there.

That's unfortunate you didnt make it out. I didnt know he sent it. That's funny. If the bullet didnt do the job the speed she fell looked like her neck could have snapped!

Well... it would appear I'm going to finally finish the rifle!
Just waiting on my recoil pad to arrive this next week to complete it. I ordered and received my dies from Rich this past week and have a neck bushing on its way as of this morning. I'm hoping to have my brass loaded up for fire forming and to get out this coming weekend, weather permitting.
I've got 2 cans of unopened RL26 I've been saving for this moment to crack open =) I've got 130gr Accubonds, 150gr Ballistic Tips, 130gr TTSXs, and 120gr MTHs to play with while forming brass.
I'm also planning to order some 126gr Hammer Hunters to test out once brass is formed to set up for hunting this year.
Couldn't be more excited!

Very nice! Excited to see another finished!

If I was smart I would have packed my light weight 270ss this week on the aoudad hunt but I opted for the heavy 300ss lol

One of us need to sling some 140 Berger classic hunters I think to see how fast and accurate they are with their BC.

I have switched to rl 23 in mine with the 165 as of a few months ago. Might pick some of that up also and give a try if you can. It should work with a wider range of weights

Oh yea, one last thing! My scopes rifle weighs in at light 7.4lbs with 3 shells on the scale! There's no sling or studs mounted in the stock yet. I'm not sure I can bring myself to desecrate the beautiful wood with studs.

Hope you enjoyed a successful hunt! I'll probably pick up some of those 140s to try for poking ground squirrels and rocks out long this spring, if the snow will ever stop blowing through here.
With this ADG brass I'm sure it will go 3300, maybe even a little faster

Thanks! It was a blast! Poor javelina and aoudad didnt know what happened. I'll get a thread going when I finish the 3 day drive home.
I hear you on the snow! Going from 85 degrees back to snow has not been pleasant. I'm ready for spring bear and rock chucks too.
3300 would be screaming and possibly do-able more than likely.

That will be a dream to pack! Sounds like same weight as the one rich did.

The 270 SS should get around 3300 with the 140 Berger classics and rl26 in a 26" Bbl. My 270 WSM shoots them them at 3350fps seated deep to fit in the mag. I let my buddy use it when we went Audad hunting. He hit a big bodied ram quartering to us, head to the left. He shot it standing with his bi pod on a boulder at 225 yards. Hit the ram right in the shoulder and the bullet blew up in the vitals, destroyed them. He took it like nothing happened and ran 20 yards in a dry creek bed and dropped. The the 140 Bergers blow up at closer ranges sometimes but it still drops deer sized game. At medium and long range it performs well. Overall I like hunting medium size game with it. Next bullet I will be trying is the 165 matrix. On another Audad hunt my hunting partner shot one with a 300 Norma with a 230 Berger at 450 yards and it was DRT. They are tough animals.

I'm planning to use the 126gr Hammers on all my big game hunting this year and figure I should be able to push them 3400+. I'm also considering the 117gr after hearing Steve give them nod for elk and Rich estimating 3500' in my 25" barrel. Load work up with them is supposedly simple and their performance on game is supposed to be wicked.
Those 140 Berger's will just be for rocks, chucks and squirrels.

They sure are tough! Mine took a 225 eldm right to the shoulder and made 20 yards or so from 590 yards... not to derail... I also agree with the 165 matrix for it. That is what I have loaded with my 270ss. Almost got to test them on aoudad.
