New build!!! Starting a .270 SS!!

So my build modified slightly!! After contacting the owner of Brux, he said they won't be running .270 barrels until March, so after more research I have decided to go with a #3 instead of #4, to save a touch of weight. Still going to have the same brake, but it will just have a slight taper. I am really hoping I can get it down to an even 8lbs or slightly less ready to hunt....I will have the shank cut short, this will not be a high round count rifle so I'm not worried about setting the throat back.

What does everyone think I can get an HBN coated 170 going in a 23" barrel? I'm hoping for a comfortable 3000 fps, my cousin is shooting 180 VLD's at 3060 from his 7 mag and it sure puts a whack on critters, I'm betting this will be pretty similar!!
I was really romping on mine to get close to 3000' with a 21" barrel and 170 Berger but that was with Norma brass. With 2" more barrel and ADG brass you might be able to run it at 3000' with RL26.

If you don't have a good brake you'll be spotting stuff BEHIND you until you turn your head back around!!:eek:
Hey Rich, does your lightweight really kick that hard? I shot my 7SS with 180s at 3050' without a brake, but it did weigh around 2lbs heavier than my 270 has finished at. Just kicking around throwing a Vais brake I have laying around on the end of mine.
Cody, your build sounds pretty awesome! I dig that stock you're looking at.

Mine kicks pretty hard prone! That eh4 has a hard butt pad though.

So slight change in plans!!!!

The action I was going to use for this build was originally a 22-250 that I torched the barrel on. I wanted to build another fast twist 22-250 ai with it originally, then decided on this. I was looking around here on the classifieds and found a rem 700 left hand long action stainless that the guy was willing to trade, and I ended up with that....so now I can still build my fast twist 22-250ai, and now I'm going to be building a .270 Sherman instead of an SS, and this will also end up making brass cheaper, and more readily available

Also, I think I'm going with a wildcat composites KS-TAC hunter stock. Very similar stock, just a little less money and I get to do the finishing on the stock myself. I always like building as much on my own as I can anyway ;-)

Cody here is my 6.5 Sherman with a#4 at 26"scoped loaded 9.25
Mc GS edge fill
My action was gutted out to save weight
Lightweight 10 MOA Near Aloha mount 4 oz.
3 port Millar break worked really well.
To hit your weight goal with that action you may need to choose a lighter stock or go down to a #3 barrel.
There's a few good threads on the 270Sherman CBECA7DC-46F2-4EEB-8780-49BBBE882C6D.jpegE595471E-D283-48FD-B2F5-EE68939947D2.jpegF6AAD1BC-6561-419A-85E8-9D9A50DE2E4D.jpeg

Cody you will really like that stock I've put it n my new 338ss and its awesome 24 oz in LA. The texture on his stocks after being dipped is awesome.

Awesome thanks for the info!!

Ya in post 12 I updated that I'm going with a #3 barrel, cut to 23" or so. The long action will add 3-4 oz, but I still think I can get it in the mid to low 8 lb range, the blank stock from wildcat composites is under 20 oz, and just needs a little finish work. Got the quote for the stock, going to be ordering it soon

I think you'll like the 270 sherman. I really like mine. I've had excellent luck with the 170 eol on mulies so far also. Here's mine on a M-70 crf
