270-300 Win Mag now feasible

Yes, that is the load i was sighted in for and will probably hunt with this year.

I will wait until someone else figuires out the Berger load. I want to give it another chance, but i dont have h1000 and that seems to be the tiicket.

I do have 3 boxes to share (170grs) for an enterprising individual or individuals.

Try some IMR 7977. It is everywhere and is almost the equivalent or better than H1000.

In fact...you can "almost" use the same data as H1000 as a starting point. They both have "similar" burn rates...

I have been having good luck with 7977 and the 170s...

Powder Valley has H1000 in stock...

Woohoo...

Called and Pac-Nor has my rifle done. Should have it next week!

So, what powder should I start with..

Retumbo
RL33
RL26
WC872
MAgnum
H1000
VV560
7977
7828ssc

My 270 Wby holds...what about 6 grs, less than the 270-300?

For me...Starting from the top...

I am still trying with Retumbo...good velocity but bullets do not group well...

I have no experience with the Alliance powders... RL 26 or 33...but I want to try...

H1000 runs well...the barrel is cooler after the same round count as compared to 7977.

I get about the same grouping and velocity H1000 vs 7977 (actually can get more velocity with 7977 vs weight)

I actually had a good ten shot group with 7828ssc...need to explore that more...

Benchmark barrel, 28", 1-9...

ETA...I am ASSuming...the 170 Bergers or the 165 Matrix...

On this list i think the h1000 and retumbo would be good to explore.

I havetried 7828, and i wasnt happy with the results, i hit high pressures without the desired velocity.

I simply dont have all the other powders youve listed.

Do not know what forum to post this to...but I have to give Big Jake some hope...

Got a Magnetospeed 3v for my anniversary. Got to love a woman who sees what I have open on my computer...

Anyways...My base round is 74gr of H1000 pushing the 165 matrix, and it groups under an inch and runs at 3150fps with my Pro Chorny...With the Magnetospeed that load runs ave 3239fps with an ES of 70. Wow.

My other base sighter is the 150SST pushed by 76 gr of H1000. The Pro Chrony puts this round ave 3340fps....the Magnetospeed ave is 3381 and an ES of 44.

I actually did get the 4" plus groups that Big Jake got with the 170 Bergers...However...

In my 270WBY 28", 1-9 barrel...

The groups tightened up when...

I ran 77gr of Compressed Retumbo...Ave was 3207 fps with an ES 15. Sub inch as I was shooting 200 yards today...

Ran 73grs of MagPro...got the Russian Mag primers to ignite the powder...ave 3223fps with an ES of 17...also grouped less than an inch at 200 yards...

74 grs of H1000 ran ave 3239fps with an ES of 12...sub inch at 200 yrds...

Using neck sized brass with the Wolf Mag Rifle Primers...Using RCBS electronic Chargemaster to measure the powder...

Is this Magnetospeed the real deal?

Your darn toot'n it is!

U owe your wife a debt that can never be paid but she'll certainly appreciate your attempts.:)

No kidding about that Chronograph. I shot 17 different shot strings, with four different powders and two different primers, for a total of 105 rounds of 270 Wby pushing the Berger 170...

I had 100% data collection. That has never happened before and I was even able to print out the shot strings at home.

After calling Pac-Nor again while the computer said my rifle was ready to ship it seems they want a dummy cartridge to throat the chamber to.

I think that I will be going with the .311 neck reamer after loading these:

Left to right:130g Barnes triple shock, 140g Accubond, 150g Tipped Trophy bonded, 150g LRAB, 165 Matrix.

They are all loaded to the same CBTO. The cases may not be perfectly formed as only the one with the 165 Matrix has been resized to actual dimensions.

The OAL length on the one with the 165 Matrix is 3.6" which is about max in my M70 without a Wyatt's box. The one with the 165 is going to Pac-Nor as the dummy round for throating. That should result in a sufficiently long throat I think.

Any thoughts on the length I have chosen?

BJD what OAL do you use with the 165 Matrix?

I do not know if this is any help…

You will be fine using the 165 Matrix as your dummy round. I can almost touch the lands with the 165 Matrix (at 3.36 mag length) in my .36" (stock) throated 270 Wby. However, I can seat the 170 Berger over .15 longer (than the 165 Matrix) before I hit the lands…

So, if you get a longer mag box…you can seat your 170s longer, before they hit the lands...

So when will you get your rifle?

The info on the Berger is what I was looking for, that means that at mag length I may have .150 jump with the 170 Berger and it also means that there will be close to that with a 130 Classic Hunter seated out as far as I dare.

I have a couple barrels worth of the bullets I posted above on hand so hopefully they will shoot well.

Sorry guys for the slow response. I was in Europe, one last tour before it burns down.

I have located some h1000 locally so i will continue my quest for a Berger 170 load.

Glad to see we have some new weapon systems being finished so we can test this to its full potential!

Happy Easter.

He has risen.
