270-300 Win Mag now feasible

I'm sorry if this has already been mentioned... I read a lot of the pages but did not hit every single one.

Have you verified the twist rate that you ordered is the twist rate that they made for you? It's not unheard of to have the wrong twist rate in a custom barrel.

That is a good idea and yes i have. This barrel shoots the Matrix 165s and nosler 150lrab very well.

It is also acceptable with the 140gr Cutting Edge Bullet.

It is maddening because this project started off as an ode to this Berger bullet.

My experience with a very similar situation, after barrel life costly extensive efforts, should have been to settle for the bullet that shot well and be satisfied.

I didn't grasp that concept soon enough and went through 2 very good barrels in very short order.

The action is headed for PacNor and a 270-300 chambered barrel in pretty short order.

I hear you and im about there. I am glad i got this barrel nitrided.

If I don't get decent groups with a couple different powders and seating depths I move on. I do not recall ever shrinking a group from over 2" to sub 1" with the same bullet.

I sent my action to Pac-nor and I am hoping for it back by the end of March.

What are you guys using for dies? I am planning on starting with miscellaneous Dies that I have. I will probably buy a 300WM full length bushing die at some point and a suitable bushing.

Initially i used a 270 wby neck sizer and seater. I had to adjust the height. Then i found out that Redding makes these dies by order. It is not in their catalog. Just call and ask for AJ i think.

I don't know if it has been mentioned but I would try R-33 and R-50 with the 170's. Retumbo shoots the best for me in my 6.5-300wm but it's no where near the fastest but it sounds like Retumbo was a no go for you. R-33 is 80fps faster and R-50 is up there too. I know you have mag length restrictions but I would try them seated .010-.020 off the rifling to see how they shoot. The jump could be killing the accuracy. I've seen it many times with 2.85" long cases before there was such a thing as extended mag boxes. I use to load my rifles with one round in the magazine sitting in the feed ramp so it would fit.

Sorry if some of this has been covered. I didn't go back and read everything.

I started the 170s at .10 and ive been backing them off in an effort to find the happy place. I am now at .20.

The only other place you can go is in the rifling then. That isn't ideal for a hunting rifle IMO but it will tell you if they are going to shoot at all. Have you shot it long to see if they are staying stabilized?

Pac-nor called looking for my action, which is scheduled to be there tomorrow. My barrel is done.

I did ask them what the throat dimension was on the other reamer they have, it is .311". Mine will be a .309" throat. My loaded dummy round has a neck dimension of .304".

What length of freebore or throat length are you asking for?

I do not have the reamer print.

They offer two different reamers and the difference is the throat dimension.

Athey are so far apart at 100 yards im more afraid of them boomeranging back at me then any hope of stabilizing!

Very nice!

You'll be the first one on your block!

Well i tookthis beast to the Avenal Long Range Practical Rifle Match last Sunday.

I was very happy with my results. On this course we usually have the state and national champions along with some $10-14,000 rigs. And then there is little old me with this home made cannon.

Course ranges from 210-900 yards. Most shots average about 350yards. Cross canyons and up and down hills. 50 shots, only 1 shot per target, no sighters. Timed event. Targets are 2 moa, diamonds and circles, a few squares.

I made 3 mental mistakes, down from my usual 5, and shot a 37.

Mine is a hunting rifle, with a magnum cartridge, competting against creedmores and 308s target tactical rifles. So since the course record is a 48, i finished in the top 1/3rd.

Now if they were measuring footpounds, i owned it!

The targets would spin over twice when i hit it and 1/2 when the target shooters hit it.

Good shooting...

Were you shooting your 140s at over 3400fps?

Yes, that is the load i was sighted in for and will probably hunt with this year.

I will wait until someone else figuires out the Berger load. I want to give it another chance, but i dont have h1000 and that seems to be the tiicket.

I do have 3 boxes to share (170grs) for an enterprising individual or individuals.
