270-300 Win Mag now feasible

Longtooth32....thanks for the info! That helps!! Wildcats with no data are interesting to load for. When I got my first one I spent a lot of time trying to figure out starting charges. It is a little easier now but always interesting. Some of the data posted online is "out there" and always warrants a proper amount of reduction. I don't like having to replace my brass after a couple shots so I find where the brass lives and speeds are not "slow". I measure brass with a micrometer looking for pressure distortion and head expansion. How the brass fits in the Innovative collet die is also an indicator. They are a good product for belted magnums. Reloading the 300 Win. Mag.

Big Jake Duke, any data on the US869? It was a replacement for H870 which of course was the "commercialized" WC870, I have quite a bit of US869 and a lot of WC870. Do you still want to sell some of those 170's??

I'll have to go get my chrony tonight, tomorrow will be perfect shooting weather!

Those loads are "hard" on the brass. I am only getting about 3 to 5 uses from the brass before the pockets start to loosen…but no heavy bolt lifts...

You fellas,

I'm between a rock and a hard place.

Took my actions and barrel to local quality smith and guess what?

It seems a 270 300 win mag reamer isn't rentable.

I hate to buy one for a single job.

Any hints?

As everyone knows, I am biased…get the 270 Wby reamer? What action? With a longer mag box, you may be able to get to 3.6" with the Berger 170s... Brass everywhere…no fire forming…steep shoulder, long neck...

You have seen the speeds that I am getting...

If you were going to have a 270 win barrel reamed out to the 270-300, you will only have a 1-10 twist probably. That will be fine for the 140-150 class, but you wont be able to stabilize the 170-175s.

The most econmical way for me was to have pacnor chamber and fit the barrel to my action. I Think i paid 585 total for match barrel, 28"#6 1-8 twist chambered and headspaced/fitted to my action.

I have used us869, it was great with the 150 NLRAB, and Matrix 165s but i couldnt/ havent got a recomendable load for the 170s. I am starting with h1000 as longtooth recomends this weekend.

Ill go look up the charges. I do load for performance over brass life.

Roy, I looked through every combination of reamers I have and have nothing will quite get it done to help you out.

I shot a few over the chrony finally.

All with 165 Matrix at 3.6".

RL26 three at 71grains were 3115-3159, group about an inch. Cleaned

Retumbo, first three shots made a .433" group, 74,75 &76g 3129-3220, last two 77 and 78 were too hot but 3259 and 3316. Looked like I will end up around 75.5. Cleaned again.

RL33, didn't stuff enough powder in , made a ragged hole with the first 3 .243" :D 72,73, 74g. the Group went to .686" with # 4... 75g from 2849-2923, last one 76g was a half inch out and 2969. I need another 4-5 grains of RL33 to get some speed.

Looks like a promising area at around 32000fps with Retumbo. Hope to get some groups with RL33 at higher powder charges but grouping with 1g increments is pretty good.

That same weird behavior happened to me with Retumbo…the groupings and the ESs were not very good below 75grs…but around 76grs to 77grs…the groups and the ESs really tightened up…again this was with the 170 Berger...

Rhian,

I said to heck with diddle around and am going with the 270 WSM.

I'm quite impressed withave the Hammer 117 in the 270 Win. The WSM would loaf at the Win load velocity plus my intended bullet is 130 or 140 class with preference towards the Hammer 117.

Thanks for looking

Just curious but have you thought of trying RL25? You might get a bit more velocity out of it.
