264 Win Vs 7mmRM preference & why?

I didn't read through the whole thread but a 8.5 twisted 7mm Remington with 180 scenars doing 2950 fps would be my choice. Or else I'd drop down to 6.5-284 shooting 140 vld at 2900ish. That's where I ended up actually but still love the 7.

I own both a 7mm mag with 140 ballistic tips and a 264 win mag with 140 ballistic tips, identical down to the tikka 26" preffered prefit 1-8" twist on both wearing 3-18x44 Z5's. For MY purposes axis deer out to 500 yds I can see the difference when hit with a 7 mag which hits harder for whatever reason. Recoil is about the same, velocity is about the same, trajectory is about the same.

Now this is where to me on several rifles I did notice loading was easier for the 264 win mag, to me it was more accurate and faster to find a sub MOA and consistent load. Brass is harder to find and more expensive for the 264 win mag, bullets in each have their unicorns but overall to me the 7 wins because of the way how I see animals just drop and die faster.

You cannot go wrong with either one…. But if you want something better…. 270 wby mag with a 1-8" twist!!

Aloha
Why on the brass. Just size down the 7mm to 264 WM. Should be able to do just be changing the die to 264. Second thought may take two steps. You are not really bumping the shoulder back.
With my 308 N Mag I use 300WM cases. There I have to move the shoulder back some. Done with one stroke. That the easy thing on belted mag cases. At the time I didn't even anneal them unit after sizing them. After sizing the brass I would anneal them and size a 2nd time. Check for length.
I have a 264 WM also. I am changing 280AI brass to 6mm, but it takes 4 times to get it there, and all I am changing is the neck.

I believe that the .264 WM was determined to be a "barrel burner" in the day before barrels had the better metallurgy that we have today! I may be incorrect….but I believe there is some merit to that! memtb
Well the 6.5 284 is good for 700-800 rounds and the 264 is a little faster so I'd say it's still a barrel burner. Overbore fast rounds eat barrels.

Yet, here we are on Longrangehunting, building and shooting cartridges with far more "over bore" than that of the old .264WM…..go figure! 🤔 memtb

Only if you over heat the barrel. My 264 WM that I bought in 1963 lasted until 2010 before a new barrel and I shot a lot of rounds through it. Including 85gr HP at 3824fps. Shot a lot of ground hogs with it.
