260 Rem Vs. 6.5-06

What is a better hunting caliber the 260 Rem or the 6.5-06?

I"m still interested in some info on the H-1000 in the 6.5AI. I'm sure there is plenty of experience with it on here.

I use 7828 SSC in my .25-06 AI and .30-06 AI... I get good accuracy and velocity. Not sure if this helps, but since you haven't gotten any other responses, I figured it might help, since 7828 SSC isn't too far off H1000.

I shot 61 grains in my Sherman for 3125 with a 140 Berger. I think it maxed at about 62. I would try 58 grains and go pow!! You should be good there.....Rich

Working with 56grns of H-1000 now and 60 grns of Retumbo. 60grains of Retumbo shot a little hot in my 6.5-06AI. Going to try 58 of Ret and work up. I have not found an accurate load for either yet.

It is interesting to note that, comparing data from the Hornady Handbook, the top velocities listed for the 6.5mm-06 with 129 and 140 grain bullets are 100 fps slower than the top velocities for similar weight bullets in the .270 Winchester. On the other hand, the 6.5mm-06 will drive 100 grain bullets roughly 100 fps faster than the .25-06 and 120 grain bullets about 50 fps faster.

Thanks Capt. Thats some place to start anyway. Keep me posted on your progress. I'm looking forward to working with the 65.-06AI, it will be several months before my build will be complete. I'm pretty set on 140gr Bergers unless they just wont shoot. I really want to use a temp stable powder. I hunt in southern AZ where temps will be in the 80*+ range for early deer, and also hunt in NM where it's single digits during the late elk hunts. I have used R-22 for lots of years but hear and have experienced velocity variations I assumed it was from temp changes. So H-1000 seems to be a starting place.

Thanks for the load data, Lefty. I'm am probably mistaken but I think the 270 was originally developed with much higher chamber pressures than the original parent case for the 25-06 and 6.5-06 (30-06) hence most manuals still respect the lower chamber pressures when publishing load data??? Am I way off with this thinking?

I'll keep you posted! I really have not spent a lot of time with it yet, but plan to over the next several weeks. H-1000 and retumbo will be the powders I'll be testing with 140 Bergers and the 140 Amax using Fed 210 primers.

You would probably get your top velocity with RL26 and very low es as well. If you use H1000, you will probably top out around 59 grains. You might make 60 depending on your throat.....Rich

I shot does in 2015 with a 6.5-06, one mule at 250 yards and whitetail at 629 yards.
6.5-06 120 gr Nos Bal Tip moly 24" 50.7 gr IMR-4166 3.34" 3200 fps chrono 65 kpsi quickload 87% case fill

IMR-4166 is like IMR-4895 with anti Copper fouling coating and temp stability coating.

Thanks Rich,
I got antsy and ordered some H-1000 today. I will be watching for Capt Academys results. I didn't really need to get in a hurry I have 15 months before I will be getting any trigger time. gun)

You could do a 260 AI and have the best if both worlds. Almost same ballistics in a smaller more pack friendly rifle. And you wont hardly ever have to trim your brass. The 260ai is a great caliber.

IMR-4166 is slower than IMR-4895 and closer to IMR-4064. It's not a big difference, but it's the same speed range as RL-15, Varget, AA-4064 etc...
