22-250 AI 80 and 90 gr bullets

I love my 22-250ai, but I am on the other side of the spectrum. I went for velocity. With 40gr speer, and a 8 twist, my bullets were fragmenting coming out of the barrel at velocities over 4200fps. I dropped back to the 50 grain V max/Zombie and average 4009FPS and it drives tacks at 250 and no scope doping on a yote out to 400, just a little hold over.

Do you want to shoot a heavier bullet for bigger game or just to buck the wind?

If you find a good laod for heavy bullets, please share your receipt.

Hey Sturner, what load are you using with Varget? I have my rifle back from Shaen Meagan. I put pillars in and glass bedded the stock. Had to remove a lot of stock to get the barrel to fit. Fire formed five cases the other day to make sure that load would fully form them. It worked fine. So now I'm looking for some good starting loads. I have a good variety of bullets from 60 grs to to 95 grs. Thanks for the info already provided in this thread
Take Care

I'm late to this thread, but I'm shooting 75 grain Sierra bullets in mine with H4350. Can't remember the exact velocity off the top of my head but it's somewhere north of 3400 on my fire forming loads.

This thread made me sign up for the forum.
I just had a 22-250AI spun up, 1:7T 27" long on a CZ550 action in an HS precision stock all bedded up. Just did load work for the 69gr SMK w/200MR and had great results, need to run them over a chronic. Next I am working with the 90gr VLD with H4350 and or H1000. Hoping to net at least 3400fps from them in a good node. It will make rock chucks easily touchable to 1500yds.

Welcome! 3400 FPS with that 69 gr bullet should be easy. The 90 gr bullet is probably going to be 3200, maybe 3300 FPS.

Good luck, you ll love that 22-250 AI

I'm hoping to get 3600-3700 from the 69s, with the longer tube and 2000MR it is attainable according to quickload. I haven't run the 90s through QL but will tomorrow. My 223AI does 3100 with 80gr berger VLD in a 23" barrel. I'd imagine with 10gr+ increased case capacity and working on the heavy end of the pressure spectrum i should see 3300-3400+ from the 90s. I guess we will see when everything plays out.

I got bored with my Savage 22-250 AI and swapped some things around - ended up buying a Bighorn TL3 and since my barrel only had about 200 rounds through it, I figured I'd just screw it on the Bighorn for now. I had it cut from 26" to 22" as well as threaded. LRI does excellent work!

I have a 1:8 twist and had read mixed reports on the sierra 95 SMK stabilizing - I had a box, so figured why not. These suckers are long! Also loaded up some 88 ELDMs. Seen here compared to a 55 gr Vmax in the middle:

Started with 39 gr of RL-26 and got a ~ 14" group at 100. Red circles are from the 95s. Decided I'd shoot the rest of the 95s at a later time and moved on to the 88 gr ELDM.

88s shot great out of the gate at 38.5 gr of RL-23. Didn't get through all my charges but will hopefully get out again soon.

I'll not be pesimistic in your journey to achieve 3400 from the 90s. I hope you get there. My 30" 22-250AI with Reloader 15 gave 3320. Possibly RL26 could have made it, I don't know. The 80s get me to 3550 so I was positive I'd get 3400 from the 90s. May simply take a different powder to make it happen.

I"m with VLD, 3400 with the 69's makes some sense now with the 90's personally I'd not be going down that road. But, loading is a lot like working with horses if you work them hard enough you get generally get them to what you want.....

Side note, my 22/250 AI is perking well with te 85.5 Bergs. Might have to bother a chuck or two in the field of dreams this spring. After they pup out of course:)

And for sure it'll be my go to for spring bears as it's a delight to carry at 7 lbs all up

Looks like you found the bullet your rifle likes. Now if you can get to the velocity you'd like and maintain that level of accuracy. I'm optimistic you will.

Resurrecting the thread.

Settled on 40.3 gr of RL-23 with an 88 gr ELDM. Right at 3150 FPS. ES of 25 with SD of 9. It'd be nice to get the ES down a little, but for smacking steel, prairie dogs, and predators, this will work!

Pretty sure I'm .020" off the lands if I recall correctly.

I brought the rifle out to Wyoming for a quick hunt at the end of last deer season and had a great time stretching its legs.

Started off by shooting this 3 shot group at 340:

Turns out coyotes and mule deer don't like that combo either. Took the coyote at 600 yards and muley at 315. Complete pass through on the coyote and made a mess of the vitals on the muley. Absolute hammer and so much fun to shoot. I'm heading out west again in a few weeks and hoping to find another few coyotes with this combo!
