338 for elk hunting- Build a lightweight rifle

Well not a Papua but it's a 338 Edge ,300 gr. bergers , 30" proof ,T-3 terminator in a McMillan Game hunter Edge , Remington stainless action , 20 moa rail , heavy 34"" rings , Burris XTR ii 5 x 25 x50 .
All in its 10.6 pounds . I have a another 338 Edge at 14.6 pound and my heavy one is 19.4 pounds . It's been out to 3027 yards so far .
I'm building another 338 Edge but 27" barrel and a lighter Scope .
Last years Elk at 1244 yards .

Rum Man
I have no idea how you got that rig to 10.6#.

My 338 NMI with a BAT Vesper, EH1, C6 magnum contour @28", NF UL rings and 5-25 ATACR and it's a full pound heavier than your rig.

And I wouldn't want it any lighter.

I'm at 11 lbs 11oz without the bipod.

CF barrel is the only
"lightweight" gear on it.

Savage 338 Lapua.

My 338 RUM came in at 10 lbs with no ammo or sling. TiPro brake really tames the recoil.

My first custom 340wby came in at 6.5lbs. Brown stock, Rem 700 action, Lilja #2 barrel. The Smith did his own radial muzzle brake. All loaded up with scope it came in just under 8lbs. It was the perfect backpack hunting rifle.

...can't use lightweight and reduced recoil in the same paragraph....and who notices the recoil when the moment of truth arises anyway, nobody... .338's big medicine !

26" carbon barrel, Bat Vesper, chamber Defensive Edge 338 Terminator, SRS 1.2" brake, NX8-4-32, EH1 or Manners PH gets you to 10.5# and 300 gr @ 2985 or go to 250's to match NMI with 245's with better on game performance.

About 2 lbs. heavier than my definition of lightweight in a magnum cartridge! 😉 memtb

I'm shooting a .338 Jarrett with a 250gr. at about 3000fps. The rifle is about 8.5 pounds scoped, loaded, and ready to hunt. It's a bear at the bench but not unshootable. Nice to carry, very accurate, and very flat shooting. All I need. No brake, can, or recoil reducers.

Love a continued discussion on an old thread.

Here's mine at 10.5 lbs.
I could drop some weight with a lighter scope and may do so.
I wish I had gone at 24 vs 28 as I don't think the velocity is worth the additional weight and length.

APR built 338 edge.
Def An-Ti
Bart sendero fluted at 28
SRS 5 port steel brake
Manners Pro Hunter
BDL bottom metal
Hawkins rings on a def rail
Trijicon Tenmile 4.5-30

10.5 # as carried in the field……scoped, fully loaded, and slung?

Little things add up! 😉 memtb

Left hand, stainless, Model 70 Winchester. 26" rechambered .338 wm barrel. The gunsmith that did it, Ray Romain called it a .338-375RR. He also said it was nothing more than a pirated .338 Jarret. It is the last one Ray did before he passed. He told me he'd do it as a favor for a friend, but he was closing his shop do to age and health. It was in a Brown Precision stock at first. Weighed 7-6 with a compact Leupold 3-9. Went back into the bedded walnut soon after. Gave me a headache at the bench! Built as a PA black bear gun. Pretty sure it will handle anything in North America if not the World with a proper bullet.

That sounds like a real nice rifle.

Does the bolt face have to be altered, what brass is used? Approximately what velocities to expect with a 250 Barnes LRX? Inquiring minds! 😉 memtb
