Who is still shooting 300 Win Mag

If we posted our ages I'm sure you would see the majority of people answering are of the vintage 1983 birth dates and earlier. After 1990s it's a softer, gentler generation of men. Gen Z is bubble kids. My son is 1998. He can shoot a 7 mag but whines like an old woman if he shoots my 300 winnie. Won't even touch the 300 Weatherby and cringes when I dial the 338 wm off the bench.

Born 1968. Hunt with a lot of calibers, but the 300 WM is the go to for me in most hunting situations.

I have two 300 WM. Both shoot great (1/2 MOA). My loads are basically a 215 Berger at 2,800 FPS or a Barnes 175 LRX at 3,100 FPS. I use the Barnes when hunting in California for the non-lead requirement. Love to hunt with my .308, 30-06, or 6.5 CM, but know if I grab the 300 WM with my Barnes or Berger loads, I will be ready for any animal out to 600 yards (my personal limit) or more.

Maybe you're onto something there…….generation related! 😁 Some of us grew up on shooting steel butt plated military rifles or commercial rifles with plastic or hard rubber butt plates.

I remember my first time firing a 300 Weatherby in an 80's Model 70 Win. It was brand new and unscoped, I drew "short straw" to go first. I'd heard of it's reputation for fierce recoil, expecting the worst I held tightly and touched it off…….it was a real disappointment, a real "***** cat"! I was standing, shooting offhand……I'm sure it would've been worse from the bench. But, even from the bench, they can't be that bad! 😉 memtb

I'm a 90's baby and I love 308, 270, 300 win mag, most WSM's. Now I do mostly shoot barrels with muzzle brakes. My browning A bolt medallion 270 is my favorite

I am 1983. I don't like tons of recoil, and I don't subscribe to bigger is better anymore. I had a love foe the belted mags in my Teens, but grew out of it somewhat.

I do still have a soft spot for 300 win mag because it seems like one of the best balances for being a hammer, but not having crazy recoil.

I have put brakes and or suppressors on almost all rifles now though to help make them more enjoyable to shoot.

My #1 hunting rifle in 300WM loves the Federal Gold Match 2014 with 190 SMKs.

It shoots loads slightly better with handloads.

My rifle really liked the N570/215 hybrid combination, but man that powder is hot. It made great velocity though with no pressure whatsoever.
I shoot this rifle a lot though and I didn't want to sacrifice barrel life for speed so now I'm back to h1000.
A friend of mine has an 8lb jug of n165 I thought about trying. Going to have to do something, I'm into the last bit of my h1k.

This is my 5-year old 300WM, based on a Surgeon Action, for which serious load development is now possible with the acquisition of a quantity of Hornady 230-grain A-Tips and VV-N565, N568 & N570 along with H US869 and a stock of Federal 215M primers. Yes, you are seeing an embedded Anschutz Rail in the superb carbon fiber shell Manners stock, courtesy of Tom Manners, which was a year in the making.
