30 NOSLER OR 300 PRC

The 300 prc is the modern day 300 win mag. It's set up correctly from the factory for the longer, heavier modern day bullets. The 30 nosler is still crippled by the 3.34 coal.

Now you can throat any cartridge wherever you want and the 30 nos is no exception but even doing that your not gaining any real advantage over the prc and if you ever do need to shoot factory ammo in a pinch I can bet it won't shoot nearly as good as the prc factory stuff.

If simply velocity is the end goal then go with a rum case or better yet 30-378. But we all know that speed isn't the only thing that counts and i don't really think you can give the win to either cartridge on that parameter. For me personally 300 prc wins hands down. I handload but I still take into account the plus of factory ammo that's set up correctly for my rifle and still having an optimal chamber/throat. My rifle should be finished next week and I can't wait to shoot it! This being said the 30 nos is no slouch and there's nothing wrong with going that route.

Man I love being able to geek out with all of you guys! My wife just gives me the look when i start going about these subjects 😂

But that's the beauty of a DBM or Wyatt's setup. You can seat out to 3.750" in the CIP length BM and 4.00" with a Wyatt's internal box and bolt stop modification.

The ONLY advantage I see the Creedmoor/PRC cartridges have is if you are stuck shooting a factory rifle and factory ammo. Otherwise plenty of other cartridges are just as good, even with a belt.
Most people are so "stuck".

Yes we can do a lot of things with a custom or semi custom but over the years I've seen a lot of really disappointed people who bought a factory rifle and found then they didn't have enough room to load the long/heavies and the expense for the modification put them in a bind.

With the PRC's it shouldn't be an issue because they are designed such that you should be able to even in a factory long action and magazine.

LOL.. . Yea, most folks eyes start to glaze over if you get past what the label on a box of ammo says.

"Gun Geeks R US".

You keep saying this. I wholeheartedly disagree. There are millions of rifles throughout the world that shoot a belted cartridge. They certainly aren't going anywhere in our lifetime.
They will continue waning in popularity over time with brass getting ever more difficult to find and more expensive when you do.

I'm certainly not giving up on mine but I bought a lifetime supply of brass for each of them when I bought them so I won't have to worry about it.

The .300 Win Mag is the most popular of the 30 cal magnums, and has been around for a long time. It has been chambered in pretty much every rifle model that it will fit in, and is the gold standard elk caliber against which all others are compared. While theoretically true that it will eventually be supplanted by something else, it ain't happening anytime soon, and brass and factory ammo won't be disappearing in our lifetimes.

JMHO

I personally think the 300 win mag and components will be around till the end of the earth. Looks like lapua started making brass for it. It's not going anywhere.

I have a 28 Nosler and after shooting it for the last 6 years I know longer shoot any 30 Cal's. I shoot with a couple guys that have the 300 prc and pass 600 yards the 28 seems to have much tighter groups. That being said if you want to shoot a lot of targets get the 6.5 PRC as well, that's what I did so I don't shoot my 2nd barrel out quite so fast. I got 850 rounds with a factory Browning Xbolt Hells Canyon. I put a Krieger barrel on and hopping to 1200 out of it, treating it a bit better.
850 rounds is pretty acceptable barrel life for a 28 Nos, what powder?
Not sure exactly. If I go with the improved version, it'll more than likely be the 30SM
I built a 30 SM awhile back and was pretty disappointed with it, I only gained 50 fps over published prc loads. I guess that makes sense with a 1 grain h20 capacity increase..
I got tired of the hassle, sold it, and built a 30 Nosler which is faster.
I personally love the 35 degree shoulder and fatter case of the Nosler, it's a better design than the PRC and with ADG/Peterson brass the whole Lapua thing is irrelevant

Ya so many different experiences with it I can't keep track. My reason for the choice is better brass life and hitting 3000 fps easily with 225/230s. Don't want to push the 300PRC when the 30SM achieves the task alot easier.

It's not a better design then the prc. Can it be a bit faster. Yes. But there's plenty of faster cartridges then the 30 nos.
