Getting bored with my 6.5 and 7mm's and up for something new. :) Got a 270 WSM that I was thinking to rebarrel to a fast twist for the heavies, but decided to just sell it and start over. Already got the 7.75 tw 400 MOD Bartlein Carbon 5R 24" #4 Bull Sporter in the pan. Didn't pull the trigger on an action yet, but leaning toward the Defiance AnTi long. Hoping to push the 156 HH over 3,200 fps but not looking to run too high on pressure. Something with some horsepower but that can realize decent potential in a 24" tube. This is a hunting rig, not a PRS high-volume project so barrel life not a chief concern. I got big guns in the 9 - 10 lb range, so I'm looking to lighten this one up a bit for a mountain rig.

So, how would you do it?

1) Cartridge? 27 Nosler? Custom?
2) Barrel: already on way (Bartlein Carbon 24" - see above)
3) Brake: leaning PK
4) Action: Defiance AnTi long?
5) Cerakote: Desert Sage
6) Jewell trigger
7) Stock (I'm leaning GW Clymr)
8) Hinged plate or DM?
9) Scope? (possibly Leupold Mark 5HD 3.6-18x44 w/GW reticle)

I shoot the 156grn HH in my 270SS. I was only able to get her up to 3067fps in a 23.5" Brux 8 twist before I ran into a stiff bolt. With your barrel only being 24" I think you will need to step it up in size. I would eliminate any standard size (.473) cartridge. (Well, maybe a 270RPM could get you there?)
You're on the right track thinking 27 Nosler. A 270 Wby mag could probably do it as well. Heck, I think you'd get close with a WSM on a XM or LA(maybe a little shy?).
Good luck with the build!

I think the WSM will get you close to 3200 even with a 24", and the long action will be needed to seat those bullets properly. When it comes to the VLD high bc or heavy coppers you're gonna have a long bullet leading to longer COAL. I got 3100 with Retumbo in mine with a 25" barrel. I could get more but I'm not pushing max when I get good accuracy with a 95% to 97% load. I'd rather stay on the safer side of things.

Yep, sounds reasonable.

Any comments or suggestions on the various components would be welcome as well. I have no experience with the AnTi action. Strong enough for accuracy performance with a big case? How about experience with the Mark 5HD 3.6-18 vs the NX8 4-32? (hunting conditions/use) Looking for objective, experience-based feedback. Bring it on.

I have a 270-338 rum imp. and getting your velocity goals of 3200-3250 in a 24inch 27 Nosler is easily obtainable but there is a cost.
27 Nosler brass is only available from Nosler and running upper end loads is a no-no wont last. other option is reforming quality 28 Nosler brass.
barrel life is short with powders like RL-33 and N570 those powders are tough on barrels but are what is needed for your velocity goal so you need to factor that in your decision. I am on my 3rd barrel, best advice pick one bullet and develop your load and then stay with it, DONT explore to many options.
mine it fun to shoot and is a lightening bolt on game but if I do it again It will be a 27-300 PRC lot more top quality brass options

I was able to get the 170EOL at 3050 with RL26 in 24" barrel in .270Win but I have been saving the 156 for new build in progress. So I would bet the 156 will be over 3100, probably not 3200 in a whizbang cartridge but still maybe in range. I know, who wants Grandpa's cartridge?😂
your the smarter one, grandpa cartridge in an ackley would be a smart option.
my experience is telling me anything over 80-85gr of powder and the return on investment is very low in the 270 calibers but speed costs money

Was thinking Bertram runs 27 Nosler brass? The 27/300 PRC sounds interesting. I've got time to play with cartridge ideas, so glad for this one. As far as barrel life, I already said it's not a priority since it's use as a hunting rifle only will stretch round count pretty far. Also going with the 400 MOD harder stainless helps extend barrel life.

Going through the same process with Steve. Targeting that 8lb mark, I think we'll come in 8.5lbs.
I went with the Defiant Hunter, but the anTIX has merit. The Hunter has a little more flexibility for mounting the shorter, lighter scope I want to use. I also like a 3 position safety, unavailable in the anTI line. Integral rail is important to me.
Bartlein #3 fluted, and 24". Looking at Carbon Fiber the advantage seems to be in heavier contours. Again trade offs, plug in a desired weight, and start adding, and it goes up fast.
It's a heavy rifle, but with the PK I was able to spot the shot on last falls antelope. Not a lot of time behind it, but I'm going with it a second time.
I went with the Mesa stock at 25 oz, your stock wasn't on my list, and I cant find a weight. Mesa also felt cross pinning wasn't necessary with their stock, others felt it was. We'll see.
Getting to 8lbs is a game of trade offs, and the ounces turn into pounds fast.
DM magazine adds weight.
Shaving 6-10 oz from your scope is achievable.

Now we wait. Not a lot of instant gratification in the custom rifle game.

Have fun! Best Wishes!

Appreciate your thoughtful response Harpec. Glad to have you in this game. What cartridge are you setting up for, or am I to assume it's the 27 Nosler?
Mesa makes a nice stock. I have two GW Magnus stocks that I really like and figured I'd keep this build in the "family" as a little brother. The Clymr comes in around 29 oz depending on configurations and inletting, etc. They are very strong and stable and I am partial to the integrated forend pic rail, as well as the overall ergonomics. I like my stocks somewhat similar in design. I think it helps me be more proficient in switching between rifles, with muscle memory being a valuable thing in hunting situations.
Likely not doing a DM.
The PK brake on my Kirby Allen built 7-AM blew me away. Literally almost no recoil from an ultra-sized case. A 27 Nosler should have enough muzzle pressure to also make it pretty effective I'd think. The 7-AM also has the #4 Bartlein Carbon 400 MOD - just longer - and it shoots very good. I'm liking it better than my Christensen and Proof carbons so far.
Thanks for the action feedback. I also like the integral rail. Will look at that.

Yep, now we wait and work at sniffing out brass, bullets, powder and primers. :)
