Thinking of a .277 for new build?

Any of the short .277s with the 170s are gunna be mighty close ballistically to the .284. The 170s out of those are also going to necessitate a medium or long action which kinda defeats the point of going short and fat. If you are gunna have to build on a long action why not use a .280 rem or .284 win to get ballistics that are pretty close to the same as the .277s in a package that will feed smoothly without any extra work and probly hold an extra round compared to the ss or wsm? You can design that gun to preform best with lighter bullets than your existing .284 or find a reduced load that uses components you already have for simplicity.

Now that that's out of the way. The wsm or ss on a short action 700 with 150 and lighter bullets will keep you in a lighter recoiling cartridge. With a wyatts extended mag box you will have plenty of room to seat vld or or copper bullets out far enough not to crowd powder space too badly. Hammer hunters or tsx's should provide plenty of penetration for occasional pig shooting. I cant promise but I would bet that the wsm 2 reamer from ptg has a long enough throat to let you load long bullets further out of the case without making them too long for the 700 short action. A build like that would take better advantage of the short cartridge and help diversify the ballistics of your collection a bit more.

I have one 270 wsm off of a tikka action I had built. it loves the 165 matrix at 3000fps with retumbo. I also just started reloading the 126 hammers at 3450fps with rl23. I want to build another .277 off of the tikka I'm think 270wsm but the Sherman max might be nice. I'm wanting something for the 156 hammers

Didn't think a .270 winchester Ackley was a standard chambering? However I suppose you could just get a cheaper .280 Ackley bushing die set and get bushings for .270, for a full set that puts you around $200, not terribly far ahead of the custom Sherman Whidden dies, but you could also get just the bushing sizer and bushing for around $85-$90 (with bushing), and use a standard seater I suppose, and save some. Otherwise, the .270 Winchester Ackley dies are about the same as any other set of custom dies, which save you around $100 over the Whidden Sherman dies.

Either one would be a decent option though.

I love my 270 Ackley, running a 130 at 3308 with 0 pressure and only 55.5 gr powder, i have went to 3400 but saving barrel as much as possible. Friend shoots a 270 wsm and they run neck and neck the same.

How does the 156 fit your throat, I haven't checked them yet?

I love my 270 wsm for sure. But I've been contemplating this kind of build myself here recently but I would like to neck down some 7 mm stw to .277. And see what would happen there . I know it's only one size smaller but still may be fun

Do a Google search, there was "once" 270stw brass manufactured. I have seen it a few places but all out of stock.

I have not checked yet. Hoping to call and talk to hammer to get a sample back. Since they won't shoot well in my 1-9twist. If you check before I do let me know your result. I'm thinking a tikka action either a #4 contour barrel or A carbon barrel 1-8twist. With a Mesa Precision altitude stock. I think that would be a pretty sweet all around rifle.

I dont know what specs you are looking at going with but I'll just throw it out there that I have a 270 Sherman for sale. Love the rifle and am a 270 cal fan just need to thin the herd and I still have a 270 Sherman Shortmag. Shoots the 170 Berger and 165 matrix really well.

I've got a .270 Ackley it meets all of my hunting needs/requirements. I'm doing about the same with a 26 inch barrel and 150gr ABLRs.

3warbird -- just curious what your barrel length is?

A 27 stw will have same case capacity as the 27 nosler, but the nosler has much more modern and ergonomic case dimensions.
