Is There a Better Cartridge Than 308 WIN?

Fired from a 20" barrel? For general distance use? Anything more efficient.

300WSM?
"better" and "more efficient" ain't the same thing man!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

If it's powder burned per foot pound of energy generated than the old .30-30 along with any large bore small case cartridge like 458 socom or a 44 mag lever gun haha …but y'all want a half decent trajectory no doubt.

Where the heck did you read that?

In the 1980's, I was shooting metallic silhouette comp. Large metallic animals were set out to 500 meters(550 yards). We all knew that impact velocity along with bullet weight was of major importance to knock over those very, very heavy Ram targets at 500 meters.

Remington came out with the 7/08 Varmint and the 308's were either sold off or re-barreled to 7/08. The difference in wind drift was amazing, not to mention the higher bc made impact velocity greater.

I am a huge fan of the 308, and still to this day, have Krieger 4 Groove barrels on my rifles. However, in a 7/08, a 160g Sierra tipped match king with a case full of R#17 is amazing at 1000 yards, and this load puts to shame my two 308 loads of the 175g tipped match king with a hot load of IMR 8208, and the 169g Match king load with 8208.

The barrel life of the 7/08 is in the realm of 3500 rounds while the 308 may go 5000, depending on a LOT of factors. So, the OP's question on efficiency is relevant to a guy wanting to get the very best barrel life, ballistics not being part of the equation.

How on earth do you cram enough 7828 into a .308 to make a "hot load" with a 175 grain bullet???
