Hunting rifle to hand down to my grandson

Bamban - obviously your grandson will have plenty of rifles to shoot while he is young. Pick a cartridge for this special build that 20 years from now will accompany him on hunt or to the range that will remind him of his grandfather. You may not still be around, but will never be forgotten. Just an awesome way to put a everlasting smile on his face.

I think it wholly depends on what he is likely to hunt. My opinion the prcs are just the newer versions of what is listed and their advantage is due more to the barrel twists than the cartridge and since you are getting a custom barrel that doesnt matter. All four should have great future support. If mainly hunting deer or smaller with an occasional elk I would go 7 prc. If hunting mainly elk with occasionally deer I would go 300prc.

30-30 in a lever gun are not fun to shoot. I had one, shot a few rounds, sold it.
It was my first deer rifle at 12. I was of small stature. And did not find it that bad. Marlin 336, 30-30. Possibly the buck fever may have played a role. lol I should add my first shotgun experience (age 10) was a 12 gauge single barrel. It had a stout kick. First time shooting it. It flew out of my hands. My older brother by 6 years found it quite funny at the time. I have him to thank for many of my bad habits. But with all the options these days. 30-30 would not be on top of my list. Unless the kid wanted a lever gun for hunting.

I have given my 13 year old grandson, a Matched Pair of, Tikka's,..
A Tikka T-3 in .243 Win that, he has killed, 2 large, Desert Muley's with ( last Fall, a 4 X 5, 30"+ Buck ) and,..
recently, my Tikka, T-3 .270 WSM, Elk Rifle that, my son is having, a Brake put on for him.
The .270 WSM will probably be, re-barreled to, 7 PRC,.. AFTER the Barrel "goes south",.. someday.
The .270 will be, "Enough Gun" for Elk to, 800 Yards ( 140 Bergers @ 3,175 FPS and, still going OVER, 2,000 FPS at, 800 ).
He's pretty much,.. "Fixed" now and, I will "Make Do" with, a Tikka 6.5 Creed, in my old age ( I will just have to,.. get closer !! ).

First, @bamban has already adopted many of us with his gracious sharing of his knowledge in PM's that we do not see as a whole. I appreciated his help in several technical questions. Especially for an off the wall build I have in the works. Although I am 73, was nice to be "adopted"!

Me? The 300WM with a brake, is a forever hunting cartridge that we all know flat out works terrific. I bet it will be fine especially with lighter laser bullet offerings that are out there.
