Your Ultimate 500 Yard Rig

What caliber is your Barrett? I looked at these before ordering the Kimber but I was stuck on getting the 280 AI. They looked like a nice gun and have seen quite a few people very happy with them.

6.5 Creedmoor its very accurate, bout as close to a custom as you can get. Even I could shoot .75 with factory loads. Its very light, the Creedmoor is about all I would like to shoot but I dont like recoil

Not good with the quote thing yet... That Barrett is awesome! And yes, I have checked out the Proof Switch, but it's caliber limited. Seems heavy as well. I'd bet you that rifle still weighs upper 8lb range, then plus scope... That Vortex Razor AMG looks FANTASTIC at 28oz. I am crushing on that EBR7B reticle. ...but WAAAAY out of my price range! lol

I'm thinking titanium action is the way to go, carbon fiber stock and barrel.

Are titanium scope base and rings worthy investments?

IDK mine are the Nightforce Ultralight on my CORE Rifle. It weighs 7.3 with no scope, probably little over 8 with the Z6 Swaro. The Terry Cross KMW adj cheek piece adds allot of weight. Since this was a rifle "ready to ship" I didnt have a choice. BTW the cheek piece is REALLY Great

Nice kit

I couldn't decide so I built two...

300 RUM on a Surgeon, Brux#5 @ 26", McMillan Rifleman Stock, NF G7 Scope 5.5-22x50mm

7mm Rem Mag on a Borden, Hart #4.5 @ 26", McMillan Rem Hunter EDGE fill stock, Leupold VX-6HD 4-24x52mm

RUM weighs 11# 2oz
7mag weighs 9# 11oz

What is your ULTIMATE rifle outfit for ~500yds on North American big game? Think packing WAY back/up in there with a shot of a lifetime on a trophy animal that has never seen a human.

Long/short action? Caliber? Action? Stock? Optic? Trigger? etc. Overkill is fine; what is your ULTIMATE dream rig for out to 500?

Last year I bought a Kimber Mountain Ascent (4 lbs 13 oz) in 6.5 Creedmoor and had the metal cerakoted and the stock repainted. I mounted a Leopold 4.5 x 14 CDS scope in lightweight Talley rings. It weighs an even 6 lbs complete with scope, mounts, and sling. I sent the custom dial to Leupold for their ballistic calculations to be engraved on the dial. I am shooting a 143 grain ELDS bullet choreographed at 2845 fps, and this load averaged .6 moa in the Kimber. I've killed two mule deer, one cow elk, three antelope, and 6 whitetails with this rifle/scope. Last week I ranged a doe antelope at 585 yards with my Sig rangefinder, set the scope dial to 585 yards, and rested the rifle on a fence post. The antelope dropped with one shot. I was astonished! The cds system really works!

A 28 Nosler rifle with a Proof Research carbon fiber barrel, a Christensen Arms side discharge muzzle brake, a Christense Arms carbon fiber stock and a Leupold VX 6 HD in 4 to 24 by 52 mm with two turn 0 locking turrets

I would have to vote for the 338/378 with a proof barrel, jewel trigger, shooting 250 grain barnes lrx bullets. That is a long range beast.

Long sticks get stuck in the trees.
Exposed target turrets get moved accidently while hiking.
Super expensive guns seem to get stolen from your pickup on the trip up there more often.
For elk, anything .25-06 or bigger should do the trick but I personally prefer the 300 WM.

I like to hike far...so one gun for anything out to 500 in Griz country would be .338 win mag..bedded fiberglass stock, Leupold 4.5x14x50(30mm),trigger kit at 2lbs,stainless, lightweight, brake or no brake,...does not have to be anything fancy if it is at least an inch at 100yds
