I never wanted a "boring" or common round and spent many years in my earlier shooting days looking for something more spectacular (with the exception of the 30-30 and 45-70 lever actions, I have always loved those). But once I began shooting suppressed and found the practicality of a compact rifle, I "discovered" the 308 and grew to love it. I now own 3 of them. It might be the most boring cartridge of all, but it just works, especially in the shorter barrels. I do not know of any other cartridge that provides as much versatility with bullets and powders. My recent shortage of personal supplies reaffirms this.
Some of my favorite 308 loads that I keep on hand for various reasons:
Speer 150 BTSP with H4895 (bulk ammo stored away in ammo cans)
Nosler 125 BT with Varget (for deer)
Hornady 168 ELD-M with Benchmark (for the range)
Sierra 110 HP with Win 748 (for coyote)
Speer 125 TNT with Win 748 (for plinking)
Berger 210 VLD-H with RL17 (for just because)
