WSM vs Standard

I've reloaded the 300 wsm and the 270 wsm and in my limited experience I was really happy with the 270 and not all that jacked up about the 300. It's cool and I like it but would probably just do a good ol 300 win mag if I had to choose.

I load for a 300 WSM with 208 A-Max. Rocks for me.

I load for 270 Weatherby Magnum as well but not 270WSM, maybe someday.:D

Sorry. Remington Model Seven with Magpro and 160 grain Accubonds seated @ 2.80".

Your running er pretty hot! I could see that kind of velocity out of a 24 or 26 inch barrel. But anyway if there is no pressure sign, good for you.

I can't duplicate the factory Remington Premier ammo w/ 160 grain Partitions @ 2980 fps, unfortunately. I haven't had any pressure signs with any of my loads. FWIW, I've been stopping at the listed book max charge, not the max for my rifle.

When you saw a velocity gain with the full length magnum over the WSM, did they both have the same length barrel?

Get there quicker, actually.
My 264WM out performs ANY of the short mags by a considerable margin.
If you can't handle the recoil of a 264WM, you need to do something else.

gun)

Based on reloading books: 264 wm data.

Nosler 130gr - 3166 24"
Berger 130gr - 3161 26"
Hornady 130gr - 3200 24"

I'm getting 3200 with rsaum at low pressures ( 25".) And I'm not scared of recoil. I said it is a benefit if you have less recoil.....

I have found my 300wsm to be much more accurate then my 300 win mag. However, velocity is no where near the win mag.

I'm running a 215 Berger hybrid with Max load of reloader 22 @ 2840 FPS.(26 inch barrel)
300 wsm is running 190 Berger with Max load of h4350 at only 2700 FPS (22 inch barrel)

Maybe I need to try a new powder, but I am pleased with accuracy out of the wsm but the velocity leaves a lot to be desired.

Not fair to compare velocity out of 2 barrels of such different lengths. 22 inches vs 26 gives up pretty close to 100fps (documented formula 25fps per inch). So your 300WSM would be doing 2800fps if it had a 26" barrel.

That said. A very nice thing of the WSMs is that they are short action. Short barrels are practical. Giving an overall easy carry rifle.:):)

No, in fact one was a Browning A bolt 23 inch barrel 7wsm and the other was a Savage model 111, 24 inch barrel 7 mag. both loaded 1 grain of powder below max with the same powder, primer & bullet. I don't have the data now but I think the 7 mag. was 129 fps faster than the 7 wsm. Like I said before in a post before, there's not a lot of difference in the two.

My current accuracy load for my Savage 11 FCNS in .300 WSM (factory except for MB install) is 60 RL-17, WW brass, 9 1/2 M Rem primer, .080" off the lands, pushing the 215 Berger at 2750 FPS out of 24" barrel. Harvested a MT muley buck last year for its 1st harvest at 425 yards.

I also have three .300 WM; one of my .300 Win Mag (SAKO M995) harvested a MT bull elk in 2013 at 931 yards propelling 190 Berger at 3043 FPS out of 24" barrel. Both chamberings has the accuracy potential.

I have a 270 and 270 wsm.with 130 gr pills my starting loads in my wsm exceed the max 270 win loads, both rifles shoot like a dream, but my wsm seems to be the one i carry the most. Both rifles are 24". The short action just seems nicer when taking mutiple animals. If I already had a good shooting 270 win I wouldn't trade it in for a wsm, but, what do I know. I bought both to to satisfy my .277 addiction. :D:D

I know that this is a WSM thread but your use of a 270Wea, caught my eye. I think a 270 Wea. with a twist of 26-28" 1-8 tube to shoot the 150-160 Matrix or a 170 Berger but yet have a factory round would be kinda neat !

It's not all about velocity. It's about component stability for me. I prefer the 300 WM over the WSM because I really like H1000. The 300 WSM gives up nothing to the 300 WM in terms of velocity when using double base powder in the WSM. RL17 leveled the playing field for the short mag in terms of velocity. IMR 7828SSC is no slouch in the WSM either.

Of course, with any double base powder you give up some temp stability compared to the best single base powders available for the win mag. It's the old cliché taking the good with the bad type of thing.
