Wolf Hunting... which state is BEST???

Thats what it is for a B&C black bear.I was curious ,I thought I might have read 15 was min for SCI.
I couldn't remember what any of mine score. I just looked at the one in my office and its close to 16...(10.5 x 5.25 roughly with a ruler). I have 2 very large males that are close in size. The rest are smaller but all fairly close. What I read back in the day is the lower 48 and wolves are small compared to AK, Russia, and certain parts of Canada and the records seem to support that pretty well. The world is full of half truths and tons of drama when it comes to wolves.

Hey thanks.Ishot a large one for our area and it was 10.75x5.875=16 5/8 Ive been in on a lot of black bear kills and its head looked huge ,but they so much narrower.Ive got a friend local that taken over 15,he get after them like you.He keeps tabs on them ,then when fresh snow he tries to find fresh track or kill and he tracks them that day, which sometimes is 10 + miles in snow and mountain terrain.Hes avid high country muley hunter so he's built to run them down.

Michigan isn't in any way in the running but just want to comment on wolves and the wolf hunting here. They had one wolf season a few years ago here. The dates were in December and the hunting was tough. I think they sold over 100 tags but they had a much lower target number for harvest. Whoever killed up to that target number used their tags. Once that number was taken, the hunt was over. I think they killed single digit wolf numbers in that 2-4 week period. If they would have opened the wolf season during the firearm deer season, they would have probably made the number they wanted to harvest. Many more hunters in the woods and more wolves around with bait piles out for deer to feed on. Wolves hunt those bait piles like firearm deer hunters do. I see wolves every year when I'm deer hunting. Doubt I'd see any during December. I guess my point is, season dates really make a difference in hunting wolves here in my state.
I really regret not getting a tag and trying this. I had a feeling it would be a short lived hunt for us. Just wasn't quite prepared for it

I think when the hunt was decided on, there wasn't much time spent on it by the DNR. Dates weren't optimal nor were the units the hunts occurred in despite the Departments decision on which had the most wolf problems. Breeding season dates IMO would have been a better time rather than deer season. Nov 15th thru December 31st wasn't ideal even tho more hunters are in the woods those 15 days of November than most others times. I'm focussing on deer hunting not wild hunting but many see wolves during that time period. The next hunt (and there will be one with who's in the Whitehouse) will be better thought out i would think. I will be a participant when they do.

Oh I'll absolutely come up for the next one. Just like not being able to dove hunt here. Such a missed opportunity

Another that we may see happen with the next leadership. These things are highly political. Wildlife management is science. Science hasn't been used in either of these species management with the current leadership. We had a wolf hunt under a different state leader and wolves were delisted under Trump in 2020. Relisted under Biden after 2020. Wish all administrations used science for these decisions

The wolf hunt in Michigan was only where there were constant wolf problems in the area with livestock !
There were 1000 permits avalible and just over 400 wolves were harvested at $100 for a license ! I didn't hunt because it would have been a 70 mile drive to the nearest hunt area and it was during deer season you can't eat a wolf....a much better time would have been in January very few other hunters and wolves would have been in and around deer yards and would have had much higher success rate !

Bought a rifle from a guy in Michigan last week; his son was in Montana the same time. Saw 2 wolves, but didn't get a shot. Got 4 coyotes. Using thermal.
