Wifes .257 weatherby Mag bullet Delima..

No havent shot anything factory since i was a teen. Im a 25 man with many: 257 whby, 25x284, 250 Ai, and 25 Bobcat ( 270 Wsm necked to 25 ). For the whby i havent used in few years my last load was 73 grains IMR 7828 100 sierra bt around 3700. I used the same bullet in the 25x 284 3450 and the 25 Bobcat 3650. Over the years i have taken many, many whitetail from 15 yards -over 400 plus. Most have dropped in tracks, my elk was 4 something it dropped but i put another one in it at close range to finish off. However i shot jugs no groups out to 600 and bullet worked good. At 1060 where we start shooting jugs with the edge it would not carry good, so some point from 6-1k i would not reccomend. Im old school on a lot and dont worry about the big exit holes, i like the fragmentation and it worked well on kills. I tried the swift scorr. last fall from the 25-285 and at 590 recovered a 100 grain bullet from a milk jug and weighed it at 93 grains. It was all in tack picture perfect at what the pics shown it at that vel. and yardage. Only thing you have that small hole with more fragmentation im thinking maybe a piece might hit the heart or other vitals helping the kill. The sierra has done some nasty damgae in side and caused loss of shoulders at times but im not there for the meat, like the fast kill.

thank you so much for the information. i am wanting to try a 100grain TTSX for my 257 weatherby, I think it would be the ultimate load, but am intrigued with your experience and may have to rethink that.

Anytime, now like i said for long and extreme long not the bullet. Ive been using 25'5 since the mid 80's and piled up a lot of deer. My mentor that got me on them says its like lighting hitting them Lol. 25's have never had the good selection of bullets as other calibers. Now for a sweet deer caliber with little recoil and deadly results the 250 ai. has been good to us. We actually bought up some 1984 classics rem 700 in 250 savage, opened up to the ai and worked very well. Deer size animals the 87 grain hornady did us a nice job, we could get 3200 on average using w-760 or h-414.

So Mike what is your favorite powder for the .257 Mag? My go to gun is a .270 win but I have a .257 mag and a 25-06 that I would like to toy around with more. I have just about all the bullets mentioned and have H1000, Retumbo, H4831sc. 7828, H4350,IMR4831, and Imr4350. I have read that they like to be seated rather deep. I really want to shoot a deer with this gun but it alwys seems when it comes down to it I grab the .270. I am just superstious.

morning, the 110 accu-bond is a very good bullet. the 100gr Barnes is a very

good bullet. she needs to practice, to get the feel of the 257, one of my favorite

hog and deer rounds!! I shoot the Barnes in my custom 250 Savage. really

good round.lightbulbgun)

I tried the cutting edge in my 257 bee and they didn't like each other. But the Ttsx and 7828ssc on them ther hand wash one ragged hole.Cant wait for Montana
I have sme10grain cutting edge for sale .

Several people have already suggested you you best option, the scirocco. Bc just as high as the Berger and bonded. I shoot it in mine at with 72.5 gr of re 22 and it is the hammer of Thor at 3750 fps, I get exits every time.

I think the BC #'s from Swift are inflated. Has anyone tested them by shooting at long range?
If their numbers are true then the 130gr 6.5 would be the bullet for that caliber, but again I doubt it?

I emailed Swift and asked how they measure BC, they will not reply, told me a lot.

I did some load development yesterday for wife's Accumark with 24" barrel
1. Speer 100gr BTSP, CCI primers, Retumbo
a. 76 gr 3440 fps 1.04 MOA
b. 76.3 gr 3460 fps 1.20 MOA
c. 76.6 gr 3470 fps 1.26 MOA
d. 76.9 gr 3480 fps 1.35 MOA
e. 77.2 gr 3490 fps 1.49 MOA
f. 77.5 gr 3500 fps 1.62 MOA

2. Speer 120gr BTSP, CCI primers, Retumbo
a. 67.5 gr 2900 fps 1.20 MOA
b. 67.8 gr 2911 fps 1.14 MOA
c. 68.1 gr 2923 fps 1.66 MOA
d. 68.4 gr 2940 fps 0.92 MOA
e. 68.7 gr 2950 fps 0.85 MOA
f. 69.0 gr 2980 fps 0.97 MOA

There were no signs of too much pressure, primers were fine.
2 disappointments, I thought I could run 100grs more accurately at 3500 fps,
but faster I went, groups were opening up. On 120 grs I thought they'd go faster.

Do you think I can push the 120 grs up to 3200 fps? Some guys are saying they get 3700 fps????

I hunted last winter with a Weatherby Vangaurd (original series) in 257Wby. Rifle was given to me by a friend. He sent along a new box of 115 grain NBTs. Would definitely not been MY first choice of hunting bullet, especially @ $82 a box ( thank god i have a Rock Chucker!!!). Anyway, shot one shot to verify zero which was 3" high @ 100yds. Next seven shots were one shot kills on doe. Shots were anywhere from 90 yards to 330 yds. ALL DRT, not even a twitch. All shot low behind shoulder perfect broadside through ribs. Very minimal meat loss. I've since read where folks have had surface blow up at closer ranges, maybe i'm just lucky? I call it the hand of god, kills WAY better than numbers would suggest. Was impressed enough that i bought one in Rem 700 CDL SF. If speed kills, then 26" barrel should only kill better. Thinking of loading some Berger 115 VLDs or 120 Partitions, but personally see no reason thus far to change it up. Any suggestions on an "all around near to far bullet"?

I shoot a .25-06 AI w. 28" barrel at near .257 Weatherby velocities.

My bullets of choice are:
100 Barnes TTSX @ 3580fps for shots out to 500 or so.
115 Berger HVLD @ 3400fps for shots from 200 to 850.

I have a 488 yard large bodied mule deer kill with the 100 TTSX that was quartering hard to me, entered on side shoulder, exited off side hip. DRT.

I have a couple closer shots (160-250) large bodied mule deer with the 115 Berger. Both had $.50 piece sized exit holes. One DRT, the other went 20 yards.

Several other kills with both bullets from coyotes to javelina. All were recovered within 50 yards or much less.

I have a couple other kills using the 100 SMK that had similar results.

The Nosler BT earned a reputation early on as an explosive bullet and often they were. I used some of the old 180 gr. 30 cal.BT (red box) that said Solid Base Bal. Tip and they were bombs though very effective. What many people don't realize is that Nosler beefed up some of those over the years, in fact the 30 cal 180 is in the 3rd generation and is much tougher than it used to be. But that old reputation endures and I am not saying that none are a little soft these days but not nearly like the past. I load the 115 for my son's Sendero at 3200fps and they are doing great, a little explosive at times but adaquate penetration. So your results do not surprise me.
