Which would you pick.. 7mm08 - 270

I can't remember who it is, but someone that has a show on the outdoor channel has harvested every animal in North America with a 30-30. If you have unlimited time and can wait forever for that shot . But if it's a hunt you may do once in your life, there is no such thing as over kill. In my opinion, which isn't worth much , shoot the largest caliber you can shoot well. If it's a guided hunt your guide will be a lot more sure of your success.

The numbers you gave for your daughters 7-08ai with a 120gr bullet at 3142fps is giving me a 1,000 ftlbs of energy at only 540yds. The 6.5 creedmoor with a 143 eldx starting off at only 2720 fps still has 1000 ft lbs of energy at 790yds. I think that is the point he was making.
What is Creed vel at 790y?

Steve

Nosler data shows capability for the 120g in the 7-08 at 3262fps. My Daughter's short barrel 7-08 gets 3150fps with our 131g Hammer Hunter. Our bullets typically run a bit faster, but thinking the 3142 vel might be a bit mild.

I like both of the options in this thread. Had a young hunter in our camp this fall that was using a 270 Savage running our 117g Hammer Hunter at 3335fps. He took 3 muleys at 400-450y all one shot. That combo is good to 600 for deer.

Which rifle would you pick for antelope, mule deer and maybe elk..

Weatherby wilderness 270 win with a 24" fluted barrel, bell and Carlson stock with aluminum bed block for $750. Comes in at 6.75 lbs

Howa 1500 KUIU Vias with a 20" barrel, houge stock that is pillar bedded for $400. Comes in at 7lbs but with a bell and Carlson stock for $280 I could get it down to about 6.8 lbs

I would like to everyone to consider lealhity at ranges out to 500/600 yards(this is number one of importance to me), recoil(this is number two of importance to me), muzzle blast, value (features per $ spent), etc.
This deliberation is almost exactly the one I went through when I selected 260 Rem. I wanted to be able to take deer and pronghorn at up to 500-600 yards (have always been able to get closer) and for my son to possibly to be able to use it for elk at close ranges if we hunted them together in his early years (likely would just be bringing him along on my muzzleloader hunts for a while, but rifle elk would be a possibility...). Felt I'd be better off with with the 6.5mm ballistics in the 260 than the 7mm bullets via the 7mm-08. And I thought the 270 would be too much recoil for my boy early on while he grew into the .30-06 or something else already in the safe. Still working up loads but things seem to be working out as I expected regarding velocities / energy I'd want to see for ethical kills. Good luck.

I have to say, my 7mm-08 is probably my favorite rifle for hunting at normal ranges. Normal as in 400yds and in. It's compact, mild mannered and packs a pretty good punch on the receiving end. Will it do anything that a .270 won't? Actually, it can! If I want, I can shoot 160gr+ bullets.

A 7mm-08 with 150 gr eldx stuffed in lapua brass sounds better every minute! Probably get right at 2750-2800fps. Should kill everything you want if you mind the effective distance.

Are u baisng hte 7/08 being underpowered due to the SD of the 6.5? My daughters 7/08 AI pushes a 120 at 3160 with 47.5 grains fo varget. My 270 took 59 grains to get a 130 to 3000. I can get a 140 to 3k no pressure signs. What are u or other guys getting out of the 6.5s i assume u are talking about he creedmoor? if that the case I havent seen to many people publishing 140 out of creedmore at 3000. I too am trying to decide between another 7/08 and a creedmoor for my son. And I know minimal but .284 little bit bigger hole as well. I know splitting hairs here.
If you want an apples to apples comparison compare the ballistics of the 7mm-09 to the 260AI.

I have always considered the 7mm-08 underpowered because there are so many existing 7mm's that give better ballistic performance in every way.

While very true, these chambers like 7mm mag result in much more recoil and are more expensive to shoot vs a 7mm08

7mm-08 loaded with 175 LRAB to 2600 and the 270 with 150 LRAB to 2900 both have near 1000 lbs energy at 1000 yards. 270 will have about 50" less drop. Realize you can load both hotter but these velosities are listed near max from Nosler for both. Put a brake and a nice limbsaver on if worried about recoil. Don't have much experience with the 08 but can't imagine a 175gr 7mm at 2600 has much less recoil vs 150gr 270 at 2900. Our youngsters shoot a 6.5-06 with 142 LRAB at 3050 (no brake) with no problem and it feels about the same as the 270 140s to me. I think both 7mm-08 and 270 would be great options with near equal performance with stock twist rates. Norma 270 brass is a good option vs the Lapua 08. If we bump up to the 7mm 195gr and the 270 170gr the outcomes are still comparable. 270 has the edge with less drop but energy generated by both appears to be similar.
