Which would you pick.. 7mm08 - 270

It was my understanding that going from a 20 to a 24" barrel in the 7mm08 only resulted in a 30-35 FPS gain but an additional half pound-one pound in additional weight
The people doubting the 7mm-08 Rem have obviously never shot one...Especially at game. They are the same folks who think it's stupid to shoot 210-215 gr bullets in a .308 Win because initial MV is only around 2,500 FPS. But as it has been proven over and over again, the slower muzzle velocities are not a problem as downrange ballistics are right up there with the 6.5's...

thks for running that, yes they feed fine, and shoot great! best 3 shot group at300yds was 1and 1/16 inch cto best 625 yd 3 shot g was 3and1/8 inch cto c. thks

Out of curiosity, I just looked at some numbers on the 7-08 with reasonable hunting rifle velocities and 140 gr Berger bullets. Actually fairly decent performance at long range. 270 still has it by a nose and a half.

I was in the same debate when I built my wife's last rifle. 270 vs 7-08 I went with the 08 for these reasons: Slightly less recoil even with stout loads, short action saves about 3/4" and couple oz., already load for another 7mm, no interest in factory ammo, a little less powder to achieve virtually identical performance. I shortened factory barrel from 24" to 22" lost 75fps with mild 139g break in loads. Currently shoot 150g scirroco's @ 2730fps. Over 1400ft lbs at 400yds.

My 8 yr. old son shot a whitetail at 125y with a 7-08. This was with a reduced load and a 120gr Ballistic Tip. It punched a big hole in it and tore up the vitals. I was impressed.

Im not sure youncan go wrong with either. I dont have a 270 but do have a 270wsm and a 7-08 both are in a sako A7. The 7-08 has a huskemaw on it and comes in right at 8.2 lbs scoped, clip in but no bullets in the clip. Wife took her moose with it this year at 460 yards. I found the lead in the far side hide. The shot was quartering a bit, i think a straight broad side probably would have gone through. Either way, one shot kill.
I haven't killed anything with the 270wsm yet but it sure shoots nice, have a vari x 6 cds red dot on it, scale says 8.3 lbs on it.

I would pick a Christensen Arms Ridgeline in 7mm-08. It comes with a 24" carbon fiber 1:9 twist barrel, so shooting Berger 175 Elite Hunters would make it a great option for 500-600 yard shots and for game as large as elk. And you could even take it out to a 1K for shooting steel.

I have the 7-08 Ridgeline and it is awesome with my handloads with 150 eldx at 2895 fps. It shoots half MOA to 700 yards and if you run the numbers on that load compared to a 6.5 creedmoor it beats the 140 eldm at 2800 fps to 1000 yards.

Is that with a 24" barrel? I should expect about 75-100 FPS less with a 20" barrel?
