Which short action magnum?

I have a new VX6HD in 4-24x52 with the Firedot duplex reticle that I am going to use I guess. I have it listed in the classifieds because I wanted to go a little lighter and lower magnification but haven't had any interest so I will put it on this rifle.

You should probably be able to use the eldm 180 I think. If you wanted to. I ran the numbers when I built my saum and 9 was fine at 4000 ft and that's a slower round. 175 elsx might be borderline, that's actually longer. But up through 175 accubond and 180 eld you should be okay. Cool choice.

Bartlein 2B to try to save some weight without going all the way down to a featherweight. I couldn't get the twist I wanted without waiting a little while and I'm not the most patient person. I ended up with a 8.7 twist. I know I can stabilize the 162 ELD-M but beyond that I don't know.
Look at the 150 Bulldozer, I have 100 of them and would gladly mail you some to test when your rig is complete. It has a great BC for a 150. I built mine with Proof 8.24 twist. States needed 8.5 to stabilize but it may work for you. Maybe @nralifer can add his opinion as to the 8.7 stabilizing the 284 150 BD.

It will work with an 8.7 twist. The difference is not significant enough from an 8.5 and an 8.7 twist to put the 150 in a marginal stability zone at sea level

You'll enjoy your 7 wsm. I built one two years back and am waiting on a barrel for a second build. I was limited to 2.98" in my savage and I was more than pleased with performance. I used 175-180 class bullets. But the BCs they offer are perfect for what I'm after.

There are Hornady, Winchester, and Bertram brass offerings and you can often pick up some good deals on factory ammo to source extra brass from for $30-40.

I heavily debated going with a 7PRC with the newer build but due to having all the components for the wsm and it being on a true short action and "working" for me, I stayed with it. My research shows maybe a 100fps advantage on the PRC and it wasn't worth the jump for me.

Enjoy.

If you have existing components already that's always a plus!

My buddy got a good deal on a sweeeeeet 28 Nosler rig, already had a 7 rem mag…once he started trying to get brass, both in regards to availability and price, he's texting me

"What have I done!?!?" 🤣

Hope he still has the 7 mag

270 WSM is a devastating deer round, just sayin!
Yup and WITHOUT,.. the Torque and Recoil, in Light, sub 8 pound, Un- Braked, Mountain "carry" Rifles !
Slays Elk like, the "Hammer of, Thor" with, 140 Berger's, going,.. 3,200 FPS also !
And, the Tikka .270 WSM T-3 SS, is a great Candidate for, a 7 SAUM, or, 7 PRC,.. "Later" !

Here is a visual example of why the SAUM is better suited to a short action than a WSM.

Left to right - 300 SAUM, 6.5 SAUM Improved necked up to 30 cal and 300WSM.

COAL on the SAUM cartridges is 2.950 with a Berger 185 Juggernaut with the bearing surface above the neck/shoulder junction. The WSM is seated at 2.980 and the bearing surface is slightly below the neck/shoulder junction. This is really of no importance if you are shooting one and done and not reloading.

Another thing to note, the improved version of the SAUM cade actually has higher powder capacity than the WSM.

EDIT: I'll post the picture with the bullets seated tomorrow. I thought I had it on my phone but I don't.

He went with the 7WSM and I believe he stated earlier he wants to be able to buy off the shelf components and not be making wildcat brass.
I missed that he had already bought his gun.

Oh well hopefully the info I posted helps someone else who may be in a similar situation.

Another reason to go 6.5 or 7 SAUM is availability of ADG brass.

Yes, I found a really good deal on 150 pieces of 7 WSM and a set of dies. I was able to find a barrel that I believe will stabilize anything I'd ever want to run in it. I ordered a Wyatt's mid length box kit that my smith thinks he can get to function well for me. If not, I'll back up and punt. I appreciate your feedback and I enjoy learning. Like you said, maybe someone else will get some help from it also.
