Which Cartridge for each caliber?

This is definitely a fun thread!

I guess mine would look like...

223 (although I don't own one at the present)

6 creed for practicality although I don't own a 6mm right now. 6BR would be runner up as it holds a sweet spot for me.

25 wsm fast twist, because I've been thinking about one for a while

6.5 creed if I could only own one 6.5. PRC for the velocity enthused or bigger game hunting application.

270 is trash so skip that 🤣. Really just never had one and my brother in law and I joke on them for really no reason.

7 saum

No real use for a 30 cal for me, personally. Maybe a blackout to run subs with my suppressor...

Had a 338 edge for a while, Lapua may be more practical so I guess if run with that.

Fun list! Well done OP 👍

Wow, I'm old school and have not been keeping up with the latest "fashion trends" (factory or custom) available today! As we (wife and I) are "one gun" hunters, I'm not gonna have much to offer….except perhaps, some past experiences and opinions.

Prior to meeting, the wife killed her first, elk, deer, antelope with a borrowed.243 Win. Then, a moose with her ex husbands ,.264 Win. Then killed lots of deer, antelope, a few elk, a bear, and a sheep with "her" .270 Win. Her only hunting rifle since 1996…..a 338 Win.

My journey has been been a bit shorter, a .308 Win. from 1966 until 1982 when I got my first .375 H&H, then in 1990 a semi-custom .375 AI.

So, our personal experiences are pretty limited….but, here's our short list!

.223 Rem. - varmints
.243 Win. - big game
.264 Win. - big game
.270 Win. - big game, varmints
.308 Win. - big game, small game, varmints
.375 H&H, AI - big game, small game, varmints, and quite a few grouse (😉)

Then there's a .44 Mag handgun - big game, small game, varmints

The .338 WM & .375 AI and now (though unbloodied yet) a 460 XVR are our "only" hunting firearms!

But, I'll follow this thread and observe what seems to be a few common denominator! memtb

Well what's your pick for the one gun to rule them all…?

Sorry…..I went back and modified my post. But, this is a specific answer to your question.

For the hunter "not" stretching the shots to the extreme and for use in North America only…..probably the .338 WM.

If you throw Africa into the mix…..the .375 H&H. If longer range shooting is desired…..I went with the .375 AI. memtb

I don't own all these. This would be my wish list though.
.223 Rem
6x47 lapua
.257 wby mag
.260ai
.270 Winchester
.284win on a medium action
.300NM
.338 edge

.

If you were to compile your favorite cartridges one only for each caliber from .224 up to 338 what would you choose? I'm always thinking about condensing my rifles and calibers down to a handful but it's so hard to choose. Instead of asking if you could have just one of each caliber, What is your favorite hunting cartridge for each caliber? .224, .243, .257, .264, .277, .284, .308, .338

I Think at the moment my choices would be:
22-250 fast twist of course
6 creedmoor
25 creedmoor
6.5 prc
270 Winchester
7 saum
300 prc
338 rum
Over the years I have discovered that the old standbys are often the best, and easiest to get cartridges and components for, so here are my favorites.
.22 LR
5.56 NATO/.223 Rem
.270 Win
.308
30-06
300WM
There is nothing on the North American continent that one of these will have any trouble dealing with, all ammo readily available as are reloading components.

If add a .338 win mag to list of old standbys for North America. You know just in case grizzly hunting ever pops up.

22-250
6XC
25-06
6.5 SAUM
270 WSM
280AI
300WSM
325WSM
338 RUM
I've owned all of them at one time or another. Think 280 AI is still my favorite

.223
243
6.5-284
270 for Texas and East hunting
28 Nosler for western hunting
300 Win Mag
338 Win Mag
