Which cal for muledeer long range?

I love my 300 Jazz launching the 215's at 3100 but my next build will be a 8 or 9 pound 300 Win Mag throated for the 215's. It will be very similar to my 280 AI that I just built. The 300 Win Mag is such a versatile caliber.

Heya Hornhunter... I just got back from the range last night running 215s out of my browning Abolt 300 wm which probably comes in near the weight you are looking at for your next build. It was shooting 2975-3017 with 3017 starting to show pressure signs.

Even braked... I'm sporting a fairly nice bruise on my shoulder this morning. Just giving you fair warning :D

My longrange choice is the 7mm dakota 1st and the 6.5x280ack 2nd, but I hunted with my 6.5 as my primary this year and killed a nice Washington mulley at 444yds and the impact/rolling was pretty impressive.
I really think its gonna take alot to pry that 6.5 outa my hands :D
The first 2 pics are bucks taken with my 7mm Dakota in 12' and 13' then the last, a 8x9 mulley which the taxidermist says will go >175" really wish I had better pics though...

Yeah, I figured it would have a little recoil. My Jazz is just too heavy (13lbs) to haul around the mountains and I prefer 30 cals for elk size game. What break are you running?

It's a browning Abolt with the boss system. Probably not the best brake on the market, but it does an outstanding job on the 168s running 3025 fps. Feels lighter recoil-wise than my 308, but the 215s at that speed... Ouch. :D

Chris, those are all awfully nice deer but that 8x9 is amongst the nicest Mulies I have ever seen.

Congrats.

What kind of velocities do you get out of that 6.5 running 140's?

Thanks! the 8x9 took me 17yrs to find :D I'm pushing the Matrix 142's at 3061, its a light load but the accuracy is crazy awesome!

Well congrats again.

3000fps is kind of the "magic number" for me when it comes to velocity It's the bottom end of what I look for with my small/medium bore magnums. I like flat shooters.

Well I can tell you that a 338 Lapua with 300 gr Berger Hybrids will do a fine job of killing a mature mule deer buck at 750 yards.... But it is not my first choice for this application for some strange reason:

Possibly because I like to eat back straps...
